King James wording
King James Version
And Moses called Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whose heart the LORD had put wisdom, even every one whose heart stirred him up to come unto the work to do it:THE KEY
The heart receives wisdom and then lifts the person toward the work where that wisdom takes form.
THE MEANING
Wisdom is more than insight you possess: it is placed within and carries you toward the work it can shape. The verse holds an outer call and an inner movement together, as the heart rises to approach what it is equipped to make. Even the names compress a pattern: Moses, מֹשֶׁה (Moshe, “drawn out”), gathers Bezaleel, בְּצַלְאֵל (Betsalel, “in God’s shadow”), and Aholiab, אָהֳלִיאָב (Oholiav, “tent of my father”), toward work on a dwelling.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that wisdom is private insight with no relation to skilled work: here, wisdom placed in the heart becomes movement toward making.
THE ROOT
נְשָׂאוֹ
nesa'o
GROWS FROM
נשא
nasa
To lift or carry.
The Hebrew says the heart lifted him toward the work. “Stirred” hides the image of the heart carrying the person forward, so the inward movement and the approach to the task are one action.
ALSO GROWS
nasa: To lift, carry, or bear.
נָשָׂא
This is the verb beneath “stirred him up”: his heart carries him toward the work.
massa: A burden or load, something carried.
מַשָּׂא
The same root can name what is carried, making the heart’s movement toward the work feel concrete.
נָתַן
natan
GROWS FROM
נתן
natan
To give or place something.
“set” in this verse is natan. The wisdom is placed in the heart; it is received there before the person moves toward the work. This links what is given within to what the lifted heart then carries into action.
ALSO GROWS
mattanah: A gift.
מַתָּנָה
Wisdom placed within can be understood as a gift that becomes useful through the work.
natan: To give, set, or place.
נָתַן
This is the verb used for the LORD placing wisdom in the heart.
חֲכַם־לֵב
chakam-lev
GROWS FROM
חכם
ch-k-m
To be wise, discerning, or skillful.
“wise hearted” in this verse is chakam-lev. The verse joins the wise heart to wisdom placed in that heart; it does not separate understanding from skilled making. Here, wisdom is discernment that can take form in craft.
ALSO GROWS
chakam: A wise or skilled person.
חָכָם
The wise-hearted person is identified by discernment that can be put to work.
chokhmah: Wisdom, including skill in making.
חָכְמָה
This is the wisdom placed in the heart, joining insight to the work that follows.
THE PATTERN
Wisdom placed within becomes visible as a willing heart moves toward skilled work and service.
And they came, every one whose heart lifted him, and every one whom his breath made free-hearted, and they brought the LORD's lifted offering for the work of the tent of meeting, and for all its serving, and for the set-apart garments. And I, behold, I have given with him Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the staff of Dan. And in the heart of all the wise of heart I have set wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded you.As each has received a gift, serve it to one another as good stewards of the many-colored favor of God.THE THREAD
And they came, every one whose heart lifted him, and every one whom his breath made free-hearted, and they brought the LORD's lifted offering for the work of the tent of meeting, and for all its serving, and for the set-apart garments. Both verses use נשא (nasa, “lift or carry”) for the heart’s movement toward the work. Exodus 35:21 shows that movement in people bringing their offering; Exodus 36:2 connects it with wisdom placed in the heart.
