King James wording
King James Version
And he made thereunto four pillars of shittim wood, and overlaid them with gold: their hooks were of gold; and he cast for them four sockets of silver.THE KEY
The pillars are named from the act of standing: the doorway’s boundary is held by what stands.
THE MEANING
A boundary becomes visible through what stands beneath it and what fastens it above. Four pillars hold the hanging, their gold hooks connect it, and silver sockets receive their weight. The verse presents a threshold as a joined structure, supported at the ground and connected at the top.
THE ROOT
עַמּוּד
ʿammûd
GROWS FROM
עמד
ʿ-m-d
To stand, remain, or take a position; עַמּוּד names an upright support.
“pillars” in this verse is ʿammûd. English names the object, but Hebrew ties the pillar to the act of standing. The same root also gives words for a standing place, so the image carries both the support and the position it holds.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāmad: To stand, remain, take one’s stand
עָמַד
This verb is the root’s basic action, made visible here in the pillars that stand beneath the hanging.
maʿămād: A standing place, station, or position
מַעֲמָד
This branch shifts the image from the upright support to the place held by standing; the pillars give the threshold its position.
THE PATTERN
Sacred dwelling takes shape through supports that hold thresholds and make belonging visible.
And you shall hang it upon four pillars of shittim wood overlaid with gold; their hooks shall be of gold, upon the four sockets of silver. And he raised the pillars in the porch of the temple. He raised the right pillar, and called its name Jachin, and he raised the left pillar, and called its name Boaz. The one who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will by no means go out again. I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of the heavens from my God, and I will write upon him my new name.THE THREAD
The earth and all who settle in it are melting; I have set its pillars firm. Selah.“Pillars” here shares the root עמד (ʿ-m-d), “to stand,” with the supports in Exodus. The image widens from a doorway held in place to the pillars that hold the earth amid dissolution.
