Selah Decoded Version The Selah Decoded Version renders what the Hebrew and Greek words meant to the people who first heard them.

This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he cast for it four rings of gold, to be set by the four corners of it; even two rings upon the one side of it, and two rings upon the other side of it.

The gold rings make the ark a sacred center built to travel with its bearers.

The verse shows four gold fittings placed along the ark’s sides, ready for the staves that carry it. The sacred center is equipped to move with the people who bear it; its holiness does not make it immovable.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that what is sacred must stay fixed in one place. Here, provision for movement is built into the sacred object.

טַבַּעַת

ṭabbaʿat

GROWS FROM

טבע

ṭ-b-ʿ

To sink or plunge beneath a surface.

The Hebrew word for these rings belongs to a word family that also names sinking or plunging. A related form names a signet ring, whose seal presses a mark into a surface; here, the rings serve as fittings through which the staves pass, joining the ark to its means of travel.

ALSO GROWS

ṭāvaʿ: To sink or plunge.

טָבַע

This verb shares the root with the word for ring, keeping the word family grounded in physical contact with a surface.

ṭabbaʿat: A ring, including a signet ring.

טַבַּעַת

The signet-ring use evokes a seal pressed into a surface; in this verse, the ring instead becomes a structural point for carrying.

צֵלָע

tsēlāʿ

GROWS FROM

צלע

ṣ-l-ʿ

Rib; side or flank.

“ribs” in this verse is tsēlāʿ. The word translated “side” can also mean a rib, the side of a body. The rings are set on the ark’s flanks, where the next verse places the carrying staves.

ALSO GROWS

tsēlāʿ: A rib or side of the body.

צֵלָע

This bodily sense is carried by the same word used for the ark’s side.

tsēlāʿ: The side of a structure.

צֵלָע

The word also names the sides of the tabernacle, showing that it can describe a built structure’s flank.

What is entrusted as sacred is made bearable through material carriers.

And you set the poles into the rings at the sides of the ark, that the ark may be lifted with them.
Exodus 25:14 · SDVThe rings and staves form the fitted means by which the ark travels.
And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the set-apart place and all its vessels, as the camp pulls up, then the sons of Kohath shall come to lift it. But they shall not touch any set-apart thing, lest they die. These are the loads of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting.
Numbers 4:15 · SDVThe sacred vessels move with the camp through bearers entrusted with carrying them.
But we hold this treasure in clay vessels, so that the overflow of strength may be of God and not from us.
2 Corinthians 4:7 · SDVThe image shifts to human vessels carrying treasure, extending the pattern from a crafted frame to embodied life.
And he put the staves into the rings at the ribs of the ark, to lift the ark.
Exodus 37:5 · SDV

The rings are the fittings; this verse names their use as the staves pass through them to carry the ark. Its movement is built into its structure.
