King James wording
King James Version
And the third row, a ligure, an agate, and an amethyst.THE KEY
These stones are not scattered treasure: their ordered place makes them part of what is carried close to the heart.
THE MEANING
Three distinct stones occupy a defined row on the breastpiece, close to the heart. The verse shows the sacred taking visible form through careful arrangement, with each stone set within a larger whole.
THE ROOT
שְׁלִישִׁי
shlishi
GROWS FROM
שלש
Three; the count from which the ordinal third is formed.
The root fixes these stones within a counted design: this is the third row, not an isolated collection. The stone names do not yield secure, distinct root meanings here, so the verse’s clear emphasis is their place in the arrangement.
ALSO GROWS
shalosh: Three
שָׁלֹשׁ
The number beneath the ordinal makes the row part of a deliberate sequence.
shillesh: To do a third time or make threefold
שִׁלֵּשׁ
This related form carries the same sense of grouping or ordering by threes.
THE PATTERN
Scripture uses ordered precious stones to make the sacred visible and inhabitable.
And you will fill it with stone in four rows. The first row will be a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle; this will be the first row.O bowed one, storm-tossed, not comforted, behold, I will lay down your stones in kohl, and lay your foundations in sapphires. And I will set your pinnacles in ruby, your gates in glowing stone, and all your edges in stones of delight. And the foundations of the wall of the city are arranged with every precious stone. The first foundation is jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald.THE THREAD
And the stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, carved like the carvings of a seal, each one with his name, according to the twelve tribes. The next verse reveals what the arrangement carries: each of the twelve stones bears a tribal name, engraved like a signet. This row belongs to a surface that holds a whole people close to the heart.
