King James wording
King James Version
The table, and all the vessels thereof, and the shewbread,THE KEY
The table’s name carries the act of sending forth: what rests before the Presence is provision extended outward.
THE MEANING
The verse gathers the table, its vessels, and the bread into one furnished place of encounter. Its Hebrew name, “bread of the faces,” holds nourishment in view of presence: what is set out is provision offered before a face.
THE ROOT
שֻׁלְחָן
shulchan
GROWS FROM
שלח
Send forth, release, stretch out.
The table’s name is linked with shalach, to send or extend outward. The word lets you see the table as provision extended toward a place of encounter, not merely furniture holding objects.
ALSO GROWS
shalach: Send, send forth, release, let go, or stretch out the hand.
שָׁלַח
It carries the outward movement associated with the table’s name: provision is extended toward someone.
Shiloach: Sent forth; the name of the waters of Siloam.
שִׁלֹחַ
The same sending-root appears in waters sent forth to restore sight, while the table extends provision.
לֶחֶם הַפָּנִים
lechem ha-panim
GROWS FROM
פנה
Turn, face toward.
The Hebrew phrase is literally “bread of the faces,” or bread of the Presence. Panim is connected with panah, to turn or face toward, so the bread’s name joins nourishment with the one before whom it is set.
ALSO GROWS
panim: Face or faces; by extension, presence.
פָּנִים
It is the word in “bread of the faces,” making presence part of the bread’s name.
panah: Turn, face toward, or turn aside.
פָּנָה
It gives the face a direction: the bread is set before the one being faced.
THE PATTERN
The table makes provision a visible meeting point between presence and nourishment.
And you set upon the table the bread of the face before me always. You lay out a table before my face, in full view of those who press me. You make my head rich with oil; my cup is soaked full.Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me shall never hunger, and the one who leans their full weight into me shall never thirst.THE THREAD
You lay out a table before my face, in full view of those who press me. You make my head rich with oil; my cup is soaked full.Psalm 23:5 uses the same Hebrew word for table, שֻׁלְחָן (shulchan). Exodus names its vessels and bread; the psalm shows that extended provision before the reader, even in the presence of enemies.
