King James wording
King James Version
And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.THE KEY
The speaker repeats “send” while asking for another hand, revealing how a call can be acknowledged and displaced in the same plea.
THE MEANING
This verse speaks in the moment when a summons feels too near: the speaker appeals to the Lord, then asks that the sending pass through another hand. The repeated “send” holds recognition of the call and the wish to shift its agency in one sentence. The hand is the hinge between a mission named and a mission carried.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Invoking God as Lord does not mean the speaker has yielded to what is asked; the plea itself can still seek another hand.
THE ROOT
שְׁלַח
shelach
GROWS FROM
שלח
Send forth, release, let go.
The verse uses the same root twice: first as a request, then in the phrase “whom you will send.” Because this root also carries the sense of release, the request holds a sharper possibility: send another, and let this speaker go.
ALSO GROWS
eshlecha: Send you forth.
אֶשְׁלָחֲךָ
In Exodus 3:10 the same root names the commission directly, making the request here echo a sending already placed in the speaker’s hands.
shallach: Release; send forth.
שַׁלַּח
In Exodus 5:1 the same root becomes “Let my people go,” so the sending in this verse carries the language of release.
THE PATTERN
A sending takes visible shape through the person whose hand carries it.
Now go, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here I am; send me.Then Jesus said to them again, Wholeness be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.THE THREAD
And afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told the Great House, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may dance a feast to me in the wilderness. The same root repeated in this plea appears here as “Let my people go”, send forth, release. That link lets the request to send another carry the deeper movement of release.
