King James wording
King James Version
And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?THE KEY
The quota is imposed from above, but the beating and demand for an explanation land below.
THE MEANING
You can be made answerable for a quota you did not set, with the force enforcing it arriving before any hearing of why it is unmet. The verse shows the blow landing on those beneath the demand while the authority that fixed it remains above them.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that a missed quota proves the burdened person is at fault. The measure is imposed, and the people made to explain it are the ones being beaten.
THE ROOT
נֹגְשֵׂי
nogesei
GROWS FROM
נגשׂ
nagas
To press, drive, or exact.
“drivers” in this verse is nogesei. The taskmasters’ name grows from the verb for pressing or exacting, so their role is built into the word: they drive people toward a demand. The same root can name the act of exacting itself, linking the pressure to the system that imposes it.
ALSO GROWS
nagas: To press, drive, or exact.
נָגַשׂ
This verb makes clear that the taskmasters do more than supervise; they press people to meet the demand.
negisah: Exaction or oppressive pressure.
נְגִישָׂה
This noun carries the same root into the pressure itself, exposing what the taskmasters’ role produces.
חָקְכֶם
ḥoqkem
GROWS FROM
חקק
ḥaqaq
To inscribe or prescribe; to establish a fixed measure.
The word rendered “task” also carries the sense of a prescribed portion or due. The demand is presented as a fixed measure, even though it is imposed by those who hold power.
ALSO GROWS
ḥoq: A fixed portion, due, or decree.
חֹק
This is the word at the heart of the quota: the work is set as a defined measure for the people to meet.
ḥuqqah: A statute or prescribed ordinance.
חֻקָּה
This related word shows how the same family can describe a measure made into an established rule.
THE PATTERN
An authority can fix the measure, direct the pressure downward, then make the pressed answer for what the authority demands.
And the measure of the bricks, which they made before, you shall lay upon them. You shall not cut any of it away, for they have let their hands drop, therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and slaughter to our God.To bend aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the bowed ones of my people, that widows be their spoil, and that they strip the fatherless! And he said, Woe to you also, experts in the instruction! For you load people with burdens too heavy to carry, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with a single finger.THE THREAD
And this is the word of the release. Every one whose hand has lent to his neighbor shall let it fall, and he shall not press it from his neighbor or from his brother, for it is called the LORD's release. The taskmasters are נֹגְשֵׂי (nogesei), pressers or exactors, from נגשׂ (nagas), to press or exact; Deuteronomy 15:2 uses that same root in its command that a lender shall not exact a debt. The shared verb brings a counter-movement into view: the pressure named in Exodus is precisely what Deuteronomy places under release.
