King James wording
King James Version
Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.THE KEY
The brickmaking remains while its supplied means disappear, making the search for materials part of the labor.
THE MEANING
This verse exposes a demand that stays in place while the means to meet it are withdrawn. The people now carry both the work and the search for what the work requires; deprivation becomes part of the demand. The constriction deepens as the cost of provision is shifted onto those already carrying the burden.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the claim that a demand is fair simply because it remains enforceable: keeping the work in place while withholding its means reveals an intensified burden.
THE ROOT
לָתֵת
latet
GROWS FROM
נתן
n-t-n
To give, put, or set in place.
“give” in this verse is latet. The command withdraws what is given while leaving the brickmaking in place. Since נתן also means to put or set, the verse exposes provision as something controlled: what is withheld and what is demanded are both set by the same authority.
ALSO GROWS
natan: To give, put, or set.
נָתַן
The root’s range shows that giving can mean placing something into another’s hands; here, that provision is deliberately withheld.
mattanah: A gift or present.
מַתָּנָה
This noun from the same root names something given, highlighting that the straw is provision the people no longer receive.
THE PATTERN
Power intensifies a burden by shifting the cost and means of carrying it onto those already beneath it.
Go now, therefore, and serve, for no straw shall be given to you, yet you shall give the measure of bricks. For they tie up heavy loads, hard to lift, and lay them on the shoulders of people, but they themselves will not move them, even with one of their fingers.THE THREAD
Go now, therefore, and serve, for no straw shall be given to you, yet you shall give the measure of bricks. The word “given” comes from נתן, the same root as “give” in this verse. Here the root’s passive form makes the withdrawal explicit: no straw is given, yet the work and its required output remain.
