King James wording
King James Version
These are that Aaron and Moses, to whom the LORD said, Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies.THE KEY
The one whose name means “drawn out” is commanded to bring a whole people out of the narrow place.
THE MEANING
This verse names the bearers of a release already spoken: the people are to be brought out from a place of constriction, in ordered companies. Moses’ own name carries the sense of being drawn out, so the one commanded to bring others out is marked by the same movement. The verse speaks now as a passage from enclosure into a life that can emerge together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that constriction is your identity is undone: the people are named as a people moving out, gathered and ordered beyond the place that held them.
THE ROOT
הוֹצִיאוּ
hotsi'u
GROWS FROM
יצא
To go out, emerge, come forth.
“Bring out” is the causative form of “go out”: the command makes room for a people to emerge. The English can sound like mere transport, while the root holds a movement from within confinement into open space.
ALSO GROWS
yatsa: Go out, emerge, come forth.
יָצָא
This is the basic movement beneath the command: the people are to come out.
hotsi: Cause to go out; bring out.
הוֹצִיא
This causative form makes the release explicit: someone opens the way for others to emerge.
מֹשֶׁה
Mosheh
GROWS FROM
משה
To draw out.
Moses’ name carries the meaning of one drawn out, and here he stands among those charged with bringing others out. The name and the command echo the same movement: being drawn out becomes the shape of drawing a people out.
ALSO GROWS
mashah: Draw out.
מָשָׁה
This verb names the movement carried in Moses’ name and echoed in the command to bring the people out.
Mosheh: Moses; the one drawn out.
מֹשֶׁה
The name holds the pattern of release within the person who now bears the command.
מִצְרַיִם
Mitsrayim
GROWS FROM
צרר
To bind, confine, or press in; its word-family carries the sense of narrowness.
“Egypt” in this verse is Mitsrayim. Mitsrayim carries the sound of the narrows, a place of constriction. Set beside “bring out,” the verse describes a clear movement: from what presses life in toward room to emerge.
ALSO GROWS
tsar: Narrow, constricted.
צַר
This gives the narrowness associated with Mitsrayim its concrete shape.
tsarah: Distress, trouble.
צָרָה
The word-family links constriction with the distress that the movement out leaves behind.
THE PATTERN
Release takes the form of movement out of confinement into freedom that restores a people’s shape.
And it came to be on this very bone of the day, that the LORD brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts. He brings them out of darkness and the valley of deepest darkness, and tears their bonds apart. So if the Son sets you free, you will be truly free.THE THREAD
And it came to be on this very bone of the day, that the LORD brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts. The same Hebrew root יצא (yatsa, to go out or emerge) shapes the command here and the completed act there: here Aaron and Moses hear “bring out,” and there the LORD “did bring” the people out. Their emergence is “by their armies,” so release leaves them gathered and formed.
