King James wording
King James Version
And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers.THE KEY
The promise is already standing in the place where you still feel like a stranger.
THE MEANING
The promise does not wait for life to feel settled before it holds. The place of sojourning is already where the covenant stands and the land is given. Even in an in-between season, feeling like a stranger does not place you outside the promise.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that belonging begins only when you arrive and stop feeling like a stranger; this verse places the promise within the sojourn itself.
THE ROOT
מְגוּרֵיהֶם
megureihem
GROWS FROM
גור
g-w-r
To sojourn or reside as an outsider; the noun here means their sojournings or places of residence.
“the land of their sojournings” in this verse is megureihem. The word translated “pilgrimage” carries the sense of residing as a stranger, not simply traveling toward a destination. The verse holds sojourning and promise together: unsettled belonging is already part of the place where the promise stands.
ALSO GROWS
ger: A stranger or resident alien
גֵּר
This branch names the outsider status that remains present even while the land is promised.
megurim: Sojournings or residences
מָגוֹרִים
This branch keeps the focus on dwelling in a place while not fully possessing or belonging to it.
הֲקִמֹתִי
haqimoti
GROWS FROM
קום
q-w-m
To stand or rise; in this form, to cause to stand or establish.
“made my covenant stand” in this verse is haqimoti. “Established” carries the image of causing something to stand. The covenant is not merely announced to people in transition; it is made to stand there.
ALSO GROWS
qum: To rise or stand
קוּם
The root’s basic image makes the covenant’s firmness concrete: it stands.
maqom: A place
מָקוֹם
This related word for place echoes the root’s image of standing, joining the promise’s firmness to the land where the sojourners dwell.
THE PATTERN
Promise and stranger status can occupy the same place; settled possession is not a precondition for belonging.
And I will give you, and your seed after you, the land where you lodge as a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for a holding of the ages; and I will be their God.The land shall not be sold for good, for the land is mine; for you are sojourners and those who settle beside me.By trust he dwelt alongside in the land of promise, as in another's land, settling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, co-heirs of the same promise.THE THREAD
And I will give you, and your seed after you, the land where you lodge as a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for a holding of the ages; and I will be their God.The phrase “wherein thou art a stranger” comes from the same gur root as “pilgrimage” here: both describe residing as an outsider. The repeated wording makes strangerhood part of the promise’s shape, not evidence that the promise has failed.
