King James wording
King James Version
And they did so; for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod, and smote the dust of the earth, and it became lice in man, and in beast; all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt.THE KEY
The dust underfoot does not stay in the background: it becomes the carrier of an affliction that reaches human and beast across the whole land.
THE MEANING
What seems like inert ground becomes the means by which affliction reaches living bodies. The repeated “all” leaves nothing in the land outside the scene: the dust and the plague extend across it.
THE ROOT
וַיַּךְ
wayyak
GROWS FROM
נכה
To strike, smite, or beat.
“struck” in this verse is wayyak. The word for striking belongs to the same root family as מַכָּה (makkāh), a blow or stroke, also used for a plague. The verse makes the plague feel like a blow landing across the whole land.
ALSO GROWS
nākāh: To strike or smite.
נָכָה
This verb names the action Aaron takes against the dust.
makkāh: A blow or stroke; also a plague.
מַכָּה
The shared root links the strike in the verse with the affliction that follows.
וַיֵּט
wayyēṭ
GROWS FROM
נטה
To stretch out, extend, or incline.
“stretched out” in this verse is wayyēṭ. The verse describes Aaron’s hand as extending, then names his rod with מַטֶּה (maṭṭeh), a word associated with this root. The image gathers the hand and rod into one extended gesture before the blow falls.
ALSO GROWS
maṭṭeh: A staff or rod.
מַטֶּה
This is the rod Aaron holds as he extends his hand.
nāṭûy: Stretched out or extended.
נָטוּי
This form carries the same sense of extension found in the description of Aaron’s hand.
THE PATTERN
Ordinary created matter becomes an active medium through which life or affliction takes form.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul. And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod and struck the waters that were in the river, before the eyes of Pharaoh and before the eyes of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. And the second messenger sounds, and like a great mountain burning with fire is thrown into the sea; and the third part of the sea becomes blood.THE THREAD
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul. Both verses use עָפָר (ʿāfār, dust): in Genesis, a human is formed from it; here, it becomes the stuff of a plague. The same word for the ground’s material holds both bodily formation and affliction.
