What Does Ezekiel 11:1 Mean?
And the breath lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the house of the LORD, which faces eastward. There at the opening of the gate were twenty-five men, and among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, the princes of the people.

King James wording
King James Version
Moreover the spirit lifted me up, and brought me unto the east gate of the LORD’s house, which looketh eastward: and behold at the door of the gate five and twenty men; among whom I saw Jaazaniah the son of Azur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people.THE KEY
The breath does not lift Ezekiel away from power; it carries him to its gate, where the rulers are named.
THE MEANING
You are brought to the place where the people’s governance is visible, at the opening of the gate. Jaazaniah (יאזניהו, Ya’azanyahu, “YHWH hears”) and Pelatiah (פלטיהו, Pelatyahu, “YHWH has delivered”) stand with Azur (עזור, Azzur, “help”) and Benaiah (בניהו, Benayahu, “YHWH has built”): the scene sets rulers beside names of hearing, help, deliverance, and building.
THE ROOT
וַתִּשָּׂאֵנִי
vatisaeni
GROWS FROM
נשא
nasa
To lift, carry, or bear.
“lifted me up” in this verse is vatisaeni. The verb for “lifted” belongs to the root nasa, whose word-family also includes nasi, a prince or chief, one elevated. This verse calls the men sarim, chiefs, rather than nasi, so the echo is in the related word-family, not their title here.
ALSO GROWS
nasa: To lift, carry, or bear.
נָשָׂא
It names the movement that brings the seer into this scene.
nasi: A prince, chief, or leader; one elevated.
נָשִׂיא
It echoes the scene’s rulers through a related word-family, while the verse itself calls them sarim.
רוּחַ
ruach
GROWS FROM
רוח
ruach
Moving air: wind or breath, and the animating presence called spirit.
Ruach holds wind, breath, and spirit in one Hebrew word. Here the breath is not an idea at a distance; it is the moving force that carries the seer.
ALSO GROWS
ruach: Wind, breath, or spirit.
רוּחַ
The same word names the force that lifts Ezekiel and the breath moving through the world.
ruchot: Winds or spirits; the plural form of ruach.
רוּחוֹת
The plural keeps the same word-family across English renderings such as winds and spirits.
פֶּתַח
petach
GROWS FROM
פתח
pathach
To open; an opening or entrance.
The door is a petach, an opening, from pathach, to open. The breath brings the seer to a threshold where the people’s rulers become visible.
ALSO GROWS
pathach: To open.
פָּתַח
The verb behind the entrance makes the gate an opening into the scene, not merely a location.
petach: An opening, entrance, or doorway.
פֶּתַח
It names the threshold where the gathered leaders are seen.
THE PATTERN
The breath carries perception into a scene where what is hidden becomes visible.
And he stretched out the shape of a hand and took me by a lock of my head, and the breath lifted me up between the earth and the heavens, and brought me in the sights of God to Jerusalem, to the opening of the inner gate that faces north, where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which stirs jealousy. The hand of the LORD was upon me, and brought me out in the breath of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley, which was full of bones. After this I look, and behold, a door stands open in heaven, and the first voice I hear, like a trumpet speaking with me, says, Come up here, and I will show you what must come to be after this.THE THREAD
The same ruach lifts Ezekiel and brings him to a gate. The repeated movement shows the breath carrying perception toward places where hidden power is made visible.
