King James wording
King James Version
The word of the LORD also came unto me, saying,THE KEY
The Hebrew opens with “and it happened”: the LORD’s word is an event that reaches the hearer, not merely information to possess.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks to you at the moment a word reaches you and begins to address you. You are not only receiving a statement; you are meeting speech that opens what comes next.
THE ROOT
דְּבַר
devar
GROWS FROM
דבר
d-b-r
Speak, utter; word or matter.
Hebrew keeps speech and matter under this shared root: דָּבָר (davar) can mean a word or a matter, while דִּבֵּר (dibber) means to speak. The LORD’s word is not detached information here; it is speech arriving as an event between speaker and hearer.
ALSO GROWS
davar: Word; matter; thing.
דָּבָר
The word that reaches the hearer is also a matter taking place.
dibber: To speak; say.
דִּבֵּר
The noun “word” and the act of speaking grow from the same root.
וַיְהִי
wayhi
GROWS FROM
היה
hayah
Be, happen, come to pass.
The clause opens with וַיְהִי (wayhi), a narrative form of היה (hayah) that can be heard as “and it happened” or “and it was”; the KJV renders the event as the word “came.” This event-like opening presents the speech as something taking place, not merely a sentence to quote.
ALSO GROWS
hayah: To be; become.
הָיָה
The root gives the verse’s opening its sense of an event coming into being.
yihyeh: He or it will be; become.
יִהְיֶה
The same root carries being and becoming, which deepens the sense of the word arriving as something that happens.
THE PATTERN
The divine word arrives as an encounter and carries speech into a hearer’s life.
After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, Do not fear, Abram. I am your shield, and your very great wages.By the word of the LORD the heavens are made, and all their host by the breath of his mouth. While Peter was still speaking these words, the Set-Apart Breath fell upon all who heard the word.THE THREAD
And breath entered into me as he spoke to me, and made me stand upon my feet, and I heard the one speaking to me.The “word” in Ezekiel 12:1 and both instances of “spake” here share the root דבר (d-b-r, speak): message and speaking grow from the same seed. רוּחַ (ruach, breath) enters Ezekiel, and he stands to hear; the word’s arrival reaches the body as well as the ear.
