King James wording
King James Version
Thou art thy mother’s daughter, that lotheth her husband and her children; and thou art the sister of thy sisters, which lothed their husbands and their children: your mother was an Hittite, and your father an Amorite.THE KEY
This verse exposes family resemblance as a repeated act: the daughter becomes her mother’s likeness by sharing the same loathing.
THE MEANING
The verse makes you face how a destructive pattern becomes your likeness when you repeat its contempt toward those closest to you. Mother, daughter, and sisters are bound here by the same loathing; the repeated root makes that shared revulsion unmistakable. The closing parentage line sharpens the accusation by tying the present pattern to the names of its forebears.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that condemning a destructive family pattern is enough to break from it when the same rejection is repeated.
THE ROOT
גֹּעֶלֶת
goʿelet
GROWS FROM
געל
The root געל (gaʿal) means to loathe or abhor, to recoil with revulsion.
“recoils from” in this verse is goʿelet. The verse uses the same root first for the daughter and then for the sisters, making shared revulsion the bond between them. In Leviticus, this root appears in a declaration not to abhor the people, showing that it can name both human recoil and a refusal to cast away.
ALSO GROWS
gaʿalu: They loathed; plural form of the same verb.
גָּעֲלוּ
The sisters repeat the daughter’s loathing, turning an individual act into a shared family pattern.
we-lo geʿaltim: And I did not abhor them.
וְלֹא גְעַלְתִּים
In Leviticus 26:44, the same root appears in a declaration that covenant does not collapse into rejection.
THE PATTERN
A family likeness is exposed when the same pattern of contempt reappears among those who claim different places in the family.
Behold, everyone who speaks proverbs shall speak this proverb against you, saying, As the mother, so her daughter. You are from your father, the Slanderer, and you will do the cravings of your father. He was a manslayer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.If anyone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar. For the one who does not love his brother, whom he has perceived, cannot love God, whom he has not perceived.THE THREAD
And yet, for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not push them away, nor will I recoil from them, to finish them, and to break my covenant with them. For I am the LORD their God.Ezekiel uses געל (gaʿal, to loathe) for a daughter’s rejection of her husband and children; Leviticus uses the same root in the LORD’s declaration, “neither will I abhor them.” The shared word reveals a stark contrast: this verse names revulsion within human bonds, while Leviticus describes a covenant that does not answer rejection with rejection.
