King James wording
King James Version
Yea, I will gather you, and blow upon you in the fire of my wrath, and ye shall be melted in the midst thereof.THE KEY
The same hand that gathers the people also blows the furnace that melts them.
THE MEANING
You are gathered into the furnace of God’s wrath, and the blast upon you melts you within it. The image gives judgment a material force: the gathered people lose their form under a deliberately fed fire.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that being gathered by God always means being sheltered: here, gathering draws the people into judgment.
THE ROOT
וְנָפַחְתִּי
venafachti
GROWS FROM
נפח
n-p-ḥ
Blow, puff, drive force outward.
“breathe” in this verse is venafachti. The root carries the force of an intentional blast. In Genesis 2:7 the same verb describes God blowing into the human’s nostrils; here the blast is directed into the furnace of wrath.
ALSO GROWS
vayyippach: He blew into.
וַיִּפַּח
The same verb describes God blowing into the human’s nostrils at the start of life; here that force feeds the furnace.
mappuach: Bellows.
מַפּוּחַ
This noun names a tool that drives a furnace’s fire, making the force of the verb concrete.
וְנִתַּכְתֶּם
venittakhtem
GROWS FROM
נתך
n-t-k
Pour down, flow, melt under heat.
The word translated “melted” also belongs to the language of pouring: heat makes the gathered mass flow and lose its shape. The previous verse uses a form of this root for melting metal, so the people undergo the furnace’s same physical process.
ALSO GROWS
nathakh: To pour down or melt.
נָתַךְ
Its flowing sense shows how melting turns the gathered material into something that runs.
lehatikh: To melt.
לְהָתִיךְ
This form appears in the previous verse for melting metal in the furnace, directly linking the comparison to the people’s fate.
עֶבְרָתִי
evrati
GROWS FROM
עבר
avar
Pass over, cross; extend beyond or overflow.
“overflow” in this verse is evrati. The wrath noun is formed from a root of crossing or surging over. The image presents the fire as an overflowing force that overtakes those gathered within it.
ALSO GROWS
avar: Pass over or cross.
עָבַר
This verb supplies the movement at the root of the word for wrath.
ever: The far side or beyond.
עֵבֶר
This branch preserves the root’s directional sense of passing beyond, echoing the force carried by the wrath noun.
THE PATTERN
Fire brings a people or their work to a decisive state that exposes what they are made of.
For you test us, O God; you refine us as silver is refined. And he will sit as the refiner and cleanser of silver, and he will cleanse the sons of Levi, and strain them like gold and silver, and they will bring near to the LORD an offering in alignment. Each one's work will be made visible, for the day will show it, because it is uncovered in fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is.THE THREAD
As they gather silver, and bronze, and iron, and lead, and tin, within the furnace, to breathe the fire upon it, to melt it, so will I gather you in the burning of my anger and in my heat, and I will set you down there, and melt you. This verse supplies the furnace comparison that Ezekiel 22:21 compresses: metals are gathered, the fire is blown, and they melt. The Hebrew roots for “blow” and “melt” recur in the next verse, carrying the metal’s fate directly into the people’s judgment.
