King James wording
King James Version
And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbours,THE KEY
The danger lies not only in the affair but in how nearness makes rival allegiance feel like love.
THE MEANING
Aholah’s desire turns toward the Assyrians while she is still described as belonging to another. The verse names sexual betrayal plainly and shows how attraction to those nearby can coexist with a claim of belonging.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that nearness itself makes desire loyal: the verse places attraction to close neighbors beside an existing bond and names the split.
THE ROOT
וַתִּזְן
wattizn
GROWS FROM
זנה
z-n-h
To commit sexual unfaithfulness or prostitution; figuratively, to turn in divided allegiance.
“played the harlot” in this verse is wattizn. The root keeps the verse’s sexual image explicit while also carrying the language of covenantal betrayal. Its verb names an act of turning desire away from the bond still being claimed.
ALSO GROWS
zonah: A woman who sells or exchanges sexual access.
זֹנָה
This noun from the same root preserves the bodily force of the verse’s image.
zenunim: Sexual unfaithfulness or acts of prostitution.
זְנוּנִים
The plural form appears in Hosea’s language of a land departing from the LORD, linking sexual betrayal with redirected allegiance.
וַתַּעְגְּבָה
wattaʿgĕbah
GROWS FROM
עגב
ʿ-g-b
To lust after or become erotically enamored.
“craved” in this verse is wattaʿgĕbah. The Hebrew root gives this desire a sharper, more bodily force than the English word doted may suggest. Aholah is not merely fond of her lovers; the verse names an erotic pull toward them.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāgab: To desire erotically.
עָגַב
This verb is the seed of the verse’s description of Aholah’s desire.
ʿăgābîm: Erotic longing or passionate desire.
עֲגָבִים
This related form makes the intensity of the attraction visible across the same word family.
קְרֹבִים
qerovim
GROWS FROM
קרב
q-r-b
To approach or come near.
“neighbors” in this verse is qerovim. The word translated neighbours belongs to the root of nearness and approach. The verse places the lovers close at hand, making proximity part of the pull toward them.
ALSO GROWS
qarov: Close or nearby.
קָרוֹב
This adjective is the direct family resemblance of the word describing the Assyrians as neighbors.
qarav: To come closer or approach.
קָרַב
The verb shows nearness as movement, echoing the way the verse describes desire turning toward those close by.
qorbān: Something brought near.
קָרְבָּן
This related word carries the same root of nearness, showing how broadly the root speaks of approach.
THE PATTERN
Scripture uses sexual betrayal to reveal how desire can divide belonging and redirect allegiance.
The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take for yourself a wife of harlotry, and her children, for the land has surely played the harlot, turning from following the LORD.Surely, as a wife has dealt treacherously away from her companion, so you have dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, says the LORD.You adulterers and adulteresses, have you not seen that the friendship of the world is hostility toward God? Whoever therefore desires to be a friend of the world stands as an enemy of God.THE THREAD
The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take for yourself a wife of harlotry, and her children, for the land has surely played the harlot, turning from following the LORD.Ezekiel’s played the harlot and Hosea’s whoredoms grow from זנה (zanah), the same root for sexual unfaithfulness. Hosea makes the shared image explicit as departure from the LORD, showing how desire here also describes where allegiance goes.
