King James wording
King James Version
Thus she committed her whoredoms with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she doted: with all their idols she defiled herself.THE KEY
Her desire for Assyria crosses from attraction into allegiance when she joins herself to the empire’s idols.
THE MEANING
This verse names a present pattern: desire can bind a person to the power they crave and to its worship. Here, craving for Assyria’s chosen men and participation in Assyria’s idols belong to the same entanglement, which the text calls defilement.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that desire is private, that one can join a power for what it offers while remaining untouched by what it serves.
THE ROOT
עָגְבָה
ʿāgəḇāh
GROWS FROM
עגב
ʿagab
Lust after; desire sexually.
“all whom she craved” in this verse is ʿāgəḇāh. The English “doted” can sound like fondness, but עגב (ʿagab, to lust after) carries a sharper, lustful sense and recurs through this chapter for the pull toward Assyria. The word makes her attachment a craving that reaches into political and religious allegiance.
ALSO GROWS
ʿăgāḇîm: Lusts; objects of desire (Ezekiel 23:11).
עֲגָבִים
The same root names the desire that the English there renders “inordinate love.”
taʿgab: She lusted after (Ezekiel 23:5).
תַּעְגַּב
This form repeats the same craving directed toward Assyria’s lovers.
תַּזְנוּתֶיהָ
taznuteha
GROWS FROM
זנה
zanah
Commit sexual infidelity; play the harlot.
“her harlotries” in this verse is taznuteha. This sexual word family also names covenantal and religious unfaithfulness in prophetic speech, so desire and worship are not separate in the verse. The neighboring reference to Assyria’s idols shows where the image of whoredom lands: in actual allegiance to those idols.
ALSO GROWS
zōnāh: A prostitute; a harlot.
זֹנָה
This noun shares the root and preserves the sexual force behind the verse’s image.
zənûnîm: Whoredoms; acts of sexual unfaithfulness.
זְנוּנִים
This related noun shows the same root naming repeated acts, as it does here.
נִטְמְאָה
nitme’ah
GROWS FROM
טמא
ṭ-m-ʾ
Be or become unclean.
“made herself unclean” in this verse is nitme’ah. The Hebrew form says that she becomes unclean through her participation. The root keeps the result visible: joining herself to these idols changes the state of the one who joins.
ALSO GROWS
ṭāmēʾ: Unclean.
טָמֵא
The adjective names the condition expressed by the verb in the verse.
ṭumʾāh: Uncleanness; impurity.
טֻמְאָה
This noun gives the resulting condition a name from the same root.
THE PATTERN
When desire gives itself to rival powers, intimacy becomes allegiance and draws the self into their worship.
They were soiled in their works, and went whoring in their deeds. You adulterers and adulteresses, have you not seen that the friendship of the world is hostility toward God? Whoever therefore desires to be a friend of the world stands as an enemy of God.The kings of the earth have sold themselves to her, and those who settle upon the earth are made drunk with the wine of her harlotry.THE THREAD
My people ask at their wood, and their staff declares to them. For the breath of whoredoms has made them wander, and they have gone whoring from beneath their God.The Hebrew root זנה (zanah, to commit sexual infidelity) appears in both passages: Ezekiel calls her whoredoms, and Hosea says they have gone a whoring. Hosea places carved objects beside that same language, making explicit the knot of desire, idols, and divided allegiance.
