This verse in the King James

King James wording
Heap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burned.

The fire reaches the bones, the body’s strength and substance, not only its flesh.

This verse gives you an image of total reach: the fire moves through the flesh and reaches the bones beneath it. The process does not stop at what is soft or visible; it presses into the body’s strongest frame.

עֲצָמוֹת

ʿăṣāmōṯ

GROWS FROM

עֶצֶם

ʿ-ṣ-m

Bone; the body’s solid frame, with related senses of strength and substance itself.

The Hebrew ⁨עֶצֶם⁩ (ʿeṣem, “bone”) also carries senses of strength and substance itself. So when the verse says the bones burn, the fire reaches the body’s strength-bearing frame, not just what lies on its surface.

ALSO GROWS

ʿeṣem: Bone; the body’s structural frame.

עֶצֶם

The verse names what remains beneath the flesh, showing that the fire reaches the structure itself.

ʿāṣûm: Mighty, strong.

עָצוּם

Strength shares the root of bone, illuminating the bones as the body’s strength-bearing frame.

bəʿeṣem: In the very substance of; itself.

בְּעֶצֶם

This related usage lets the burning bones suggest the substance itself is reached.

הַתֵּם

hattēm

GROWS FROM

תָּמַם

t-m-m

To be complete or finished; to bring something to its end.

“use up the flesh” in this verse is hattēm. Alongside consumption, the Hebrew verb carries the sense of finishing or bringing to completion. Here, that sharpens the image: the flesh is brought through to its end, and even the bones are burned.

ALSO GROWS

tāmîm: Whole, complete, sound.

תָּמִים

The root’s sense of completeness gives the command to consume the flesh a sense of thoroughness.

tōm: Completeness, integrity.

תֹּם

This branch echoes the verse’s movement toward a process carried through to its end.

Fire carries its work from the visible surface into the underlying substance, consuming or exposing what lies there.

For my days run out like smoke, and my bones burn like a hearth.
Psalm 102:3 · SDVAs in Ezekiel, the image of fire reaches beyond what is visible and names the burning of the bones themselves.
Each one's work will be made visible, for the day will show it, because it is uncovered in fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is.
1 Corinthians 3:13 · SDVHere fire exposes the substance and quality of what it reaches.
For our God is a fire that devours.
Hebrews 12:29 · SDVThe verse names fire as a force that consumes, echoing Ezekiel’s image of a process that reaches through its object.
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for out of man she was taken.
Genesis 2:23 · SDV

The Hebrew ⁨עֶצֶם⁩ (ʿeṣem, “bone”) appears in both verses. Genesis uses it for shared substance; Ezekiel’s image carries the fire all the way to that substance.
