King James wording
King James Version
Take the choice of the flock, and burn also the bones under it, and make it boil well, and let them seethe the bones of it therein.THE KEY
The heat reaches even the bones: what seems most solid is inside the vessel too.
THE MEANING
The scene is total: the choice of the flock is gathered over its bones, and the whole vessel boils. The heat reaches the bones beneath the flesh, leaving no part of what is held inside untouched. The image carries a devastation that takes the prized and the most solid together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that when everything around a person is under pressure, their deepest foundation must remain untouched.
THE ROOT
עֲצָמִים
ʿăṣāmîm
GROWS FROM
ע־צ־ם
ʿ-ṣ-m
The root carries the sense of being strong; עֶצֶם (ʿetsem) means bone, substance, self, or the very thing itself.
English gives “bones” as a body part, but the Hebrew word also carries a resonance of substance and self. The bones are not scraps outside the scene: they are the solid substance beneath the flesh, and they too are brought into the boil.
ALSO GROWS
ʿetsem: Bone; substance, self, or the very thing itself.
עֶצֶם
This branch makes the bones sound like the body’s underlying substance, not merely what is left over.
ʿāṣûm: Mighty, strong, or numerous.
עָצוּם
This branch echoes strength in the root, deepening the force of the bones as the body’s solid part.
מִבְחַר
mivḥar
GROWS FROM
ב־ח־ר
b-ḥ-r
To choose or select; מִבְחַר (mivḥar) refers to what is chosen, the choice or finest portion.
“choice” in this verse is mivḥar. The vessel holds the selected part of the flock, not an unspecified remainder. The root keeps the prized within the reach of the heat.
ALSO GROWS
bāḥar: To choose or select.
בָּחַר
The verb shows that the flock’s portion is deliberately chosen.
nivḥār: Chosen or selected.
נִבְחָר
This branch carries the same selection into the idea of what has been set apart as choice.
THE PATTERN
Heat reaches beyond what is visible, exposing what lies beneath and within its reach.
And the word of the LORD came to me a second time, saying, What do you see? And I said, I see a pot blown to a boil, and its face is from the north. They say, "It has not drawn near; let us build houses. This city is the pot, and we are the flesh."Each one's work will be made visible, for the day will show it, because it is uncovered in fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is.THE THREAD
Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones, Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live. The same Hebrew word for bones, עֲצָמִים (ʿăṣāmîm), appears here and in the valley of dry bones. In one verse bones are caught in the boil; in the other, breath enters them and life rises.
