This verse in the King James

King James wording
And I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them among the countries; and they shall know that I am the LORD.

The LORD becomes known beyond Egypt through the same act that violently breaks Egypt’s borders apart.

The Egyptians are scattered across other nations and lands, and there they know the LORD. Recognition arrives through forced dispersal; it does not soften the violence or make exile feel like restoration.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that a nation’s borders can make its power permanent is undone: its people are scattered beyond them, and there they recognize the LORD.

וַהֲפִיצוֹתִי

vahafitsoti

GROWS FROM

פוץ

To scatter or disperse.

“winnow” in this verse is vahafitsoti. The verb names a forceful breaking apart across other peoples and lands. Here the scattering itself becomes the place where the Egyptians come to know the LORD; the recognition does not undo the rupture.

ALSO GROWS

hefits: To cause people or things to scatter.

הֵפִיץ

It shows the root’s force: this is an action imposed on a people, not simply a change of location.

nafots: Scattered or dispersed.

נָפוֹץ

This form describes the resulting state of a people spread beyond their former place.

מִצְרַיִם

Mitsrayim

GROWS FROM

צרר

To bind, press in, or constrict.

“Egyptians” in this verse is Mitsrayim. The name carries constriction: it echoes ⁨צַר⁩ (tsar, narrow or tight), and its dual form holds the image of two narrows. The people named by that constriction are scattered across other nations, in a rupture the verse does not disguise as healing.

ALSO GROWS

tsar: Narrow, tight, or constricted; also an adversary.

צַר

It reveals the constriction carried in the name Mitsrayim.

metsar: A narrow place or a state of distress.

מֵצַר

It makes the movement from the narrows into dispersion visible without making that dispersal gentle.

וְיָדְעוּ

veyad'u

GROWS FROM

ידע

To know or perceive.

“perceive” in this verse is veyad'u. This is knowing by encounter, not merely receiving information. The Egyptians recognize who the LORD is through what happens to them.

ALSO GROWS

da'at: Knowledge or knowing.

דַּעַת

It shows the root’s movement from an encounter to what is known.

hodi'a: To cause someone to know or to declare.

הוֹדִיעַ

The verse joins the Egyptians’ recognition to the LORD’s action in their lives.

Dispersion carries a people beyond the borders that once held their shared life and presence.

And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and you shall be left few in number among the nations, where the LORD shall lead you.
Deuteronomy 4:27 · SDVScattering breaks a people’s concentration in their own land and leaves them among other nations.
And they shall perceive that I am the LORD, when I winnow them among the nations, and winnow them through the lands.
Ezekiel 12:15 · SDVThe same book directly joins dispersion among nations with recognition of the LORD.
So those who were scattered passed through every place, bringing the good news of the word.
Acts 8:4 · SDVPeople forced out of Jerusalem carry their message across the places where they are dispersed.
So the LORD scattered them from there across the face of all the earth; and they let go of building the city.
Genesis 11:8 · SDV

Genesis uses the same root, ⁨פוץ⁩ (pûts, scatter), when a people are dispersed and their city-building project stops. That echo shows how scattering breaks a people’s ability to hold a shared project in one place; Ezekiel adds the severe recognition that follows for Egypt.
