King James wording
King James Version
And the sword shall come upon Egypt, and great pain shall be in Ethiopia, when the slain shall fall in Egypt, and they shall take away her multitude, and her foundations shall be broken down.THE KEY
Mitzrayim, the two narrows, loses not only its people but the very foundation established to make it stand.
THE MEANING
The verse holds collapse in full view: Egypt is struck by the sword, anguish reaches Cush, the dead fall, the people are carried away, and the foundations break. The rupture reaches bodies, a population, and the structure beneath them at once.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A powerful center is not secure simply because it has a multitude and foundations; both can be taken and broken.
THE ROOT
יְסוֹדֶיהָ
yesodeha
GROWS FROM
יסד
to establish; to lay a foundation
The Hebrew word for foundations grows from the root meaning to establish or lay a foundation. The verse says that what was established as the base itself is demolished.
ALSO GROWS
yasad: to establish; to lay a foundation
יָסַד
It shares the root consonants יסד with יְסוֹדֶיהָ; it names the act that produces a foundation.
yesod: foundation; base
יְסוֹד
This singular noun carries the same root, showing that the demolished foundations are the established base itself.
THE PATTERN
When a society’s foundations give way, its people, walls, and wealth cannot secure it.
If the foundations are torn down, what can the aligned one do?Shout against her, all around. She has given her hand; her foundations have fallen; her walls have been torn down. For this is the LORD's vengeance. Take vengeance on her; as she has done, do to her.And they throw dust on their heads, and cry out, weeping and mourning, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships on the sea grew rich by her costliness! For in one hour she has been emptied.THE THREAD
Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a weighty cornerstone, a foundation set firm. The one who leans his weight will not hurry.Ezekiel’s foundations are broken; Isaiah uses the same Hebrew root יסד (yasad, to establish or lay a foundation) for what is laid as a foundation in Zion. One verse shows an established base demolished, while the other shows a foundation being laid.
