King James wording
King James Version
Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?THE KEY
The Hebrew root behind “turn” also gives “restore”: the call away from death is a call back toward life.
THE MEANING
God’s living oath says that the wicked person’s death is not what he desires; he names turning from that person’s way and living as the alternative. The doubled call meets you now at the point where a destructive way can be left. The question about death makes the direction of the way matter without making it your fixed identity.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that God desires the wicked person’s death, or that a destructive path leaves no way back.
THE ROOT
שׁוּבוּ
shuvu
GROWS FROM
שׁוּב
Turn back, return, bring back.
The root behind the doubled command also appears in a Hebrew verb for restoring or bringing back. The call to turn from a death-bound way therefore carries the sense of return and restoration that the English word alone does not show.
ALSO GROWS
yeshovev: Restores, brings back.
יְשׁוֹבֵב
Psalm 23:3 uses this form for “restoreth”; the same root links Ezekiel’s turn with the restoration of the living soul.
meshubah: Backsliding, turning away.
מְשׁוּבָה
This form names a turning away; the shared root shows that direction matters, and Ezekiel repeats the call to turn back.
אֶחְפֹּץ
echpotz
GROWS FROM
חפץ
Desire, take delight in, regard as desirable.
“do not delight” in this verse is echpotz. The verse speaks of desire, not detached approval: God names the person’s return and life as the alternative to death. The root holds desire and delight together, giving the denial of pleasure a clear direction.
ALSO GROWS
chafets: To desire or take delight in.
חָפֵץ
This verbal form is the root family’s direct expression of desire, the sense at work in the verse.
chephets: Desire, delight, or a matter one is concerned with.
חֵפֶץ
The noun form shows desire extending to what is valued or pursued, sharpening the contrast between death and the life God desires.
וְחָיָה
vechayah
GROWS FROM
חיה
Live, be alive, remain alive.
“live” in this verse is vechayah. The verb for living belongs to the same root family as the ordinary word for someone alive and the noun for life. Here life is the stated destination of turning, not a separate idea added after it.
ALSO GROWS
chai: Alive, living.
חַי
This form names the living state that the verse places opposite death.
chayyim: Life.
חַיִּים
This noun from the same root shows that the verb “live” and the condition of life share one Hebrew seed.
THE PATTERN
Scripture sets life against a destructive way and presents turning as the opening between them.
I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live. For I do not delight in the death of the one who dies, says the Lord LORD. Therefore turn yourselves, and live.Turn around, then, and turn back, so that your shortcomings may be wiped away, and the times of breathing again may come from the face of the LORD.THE THREAD
He turns back my living soul; he leads me in the tracks of alignment for the sake of his nature. The Hebrew verb rendered “restoreth” comes from שׁוּב, the same root behind Ezekiel’s repeated “turn.” Ezekiel names return from a death-bound way; the psalm shows that same movement as restoration of the living soul and its path.
