King James wording
King James Version
Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.THE KEY
A warning is danger made visible, but the trumpet’s sound can reach the ear without becoming heed.
THE MEANING
When warning reaches you, hearing the sound does not mean you have taken warning. If the sword comes and takes you away, the verse says the blood rests on the head of the one who heard but did not heed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie it dissolves is that hearing a warning is the same as answering it, or that being warned automatically transfers the consequence away.
THE ROOT
נִזְהָר
nizhar
GROWS FROM
זהר
z-h-r
Shine or make clear; in this form, be warned or take heed.
The Hebrew warning word shares a root with shining: warning makes danger visible. The trumpet supplies the sound, but the verse distinguishes hearing it from receiving what it reveals.
ALSO GROWS
yazhiru: They will shine.
יַזְהִרוּ
The same root can describe light appearing; warning, too, brings what is hidden into view.
hizhir: Warn or admonish.
הִזְהִיר
This is the warning action: making danger clear enough to be seen.
הַשֹּׁמֵעַ
hashomea
GROWS FROM
שמע
sh-m-ʿ
Hear, listen, or heed.
“hears and does not respond” in this verse is hashomea. The verse says the hearer receives the trumpet’s sound but does not take warning. It exposes the gap between sound reaching the ear and a message being answered.
ALSO GROWS
shema: Hear and respond.
שְׁמַע
This familiar form carries hearing toward response, which makes the verse’s distinction between hearing and heeding especially sharp.
shemuah: Report or news heard.
שְׁמוּעָה
A message can arrive as information; the verse shows that receiving the sound alone is not yet taking its warning.
THE PATTERN
A warning becomes consequential when hearing turns into response; refusal leaves the hearer facing what was announced.
Because I call out and you refuse; I stretch out my hand, and no one bends an ear.But be makers of the word, and not hearers only, miscounting yourselves. He heard the sound of the horn and did not respond, taking no warning; his blood shall be upon him. But whoever takes the warning shall escape with his living soul.THE THREAD
Yet if you warn the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his crookedness; but you have snatched your living soul. The Hebrew verb translated “warn” here comes from the same זהר (z-h-r) root as “taketh warning” in Ezekiel 33:4. The watchman makes danger visible; the warning does not compel the hearer to turn.
