King James wording
King James Version
Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.THE KEY
The Hebrew word for “hope” is also a word for a cord: the people say their line has perished while the vision still names them as a whole.
THE MEANING
This verse gives the reader honest language for a moment when the inner ground feels spent: bones are dry, expectation has perished, and separation feels complete. Yet the bones are still named as the whole house of Israel; יִשְׂרָאֵל (Yisra’el, a name linked with wrestling with God) holds a struggling identity inside the confession of being cut off. The despair is spoken plainly, but the vision has not stopped speaking.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The false conclusion is that because you feel severed and cannot see a future, your identity and every line of expectation are gone too.
THE ROOT
תִּקְוָתֵנוּ
tiqvatenu
GROWS FROM
קוה
To wait, look for, or expect; the related noun also carries the sense of a line or cord.
תִּקְוָה (tiqvah, hope or expectation) is also used for a cord or line, as in Rahab’s scarlet cord. Here, “our hope is lost” says their line of expectation has perished, even as the word itself holds the image of a line.
ALSO GROWS
qavah: To wait for or expect.
קָוָה
The verb gives hope the shape of waiting toward what is still expected.
tiqvah: Hope or expectation; also a cord or line.
תִּקְוָה
The same noun links inward expectation with the visible cord in Joshua 2:18.
אָבְדָה
avdah
GROWS FROM
אבד
To perish, be destroyed, or become lost.
“our hope has lost the way” in this verse is avdah. The verb describes their expectation as perished, more than merely faded or misplaced. The next movement of the vision answers this claim directly, making the word’s finality part of the passage’s force.
ALSO GROWS
avad: To perish or lose the way.
אָבַד
The root describes a real loss, not simply a feeling of uncertainty.
avaddon: Destruction.
אֲבַדּוֹן
This related form shows how strongly the word family can name ruin or perishing.
נִגְזַרְנוּ
nigzarnu
GROWS FROM
גזר
To cut, divide, or sever; the word family also includes the sense of a decree.
“cut off” in this verse is nigzarnu. Their confession sounds as though severance has been pronounced as a settled sentence. But the verse presents this as what they say, giving despair its full voice without making it the vision’s final voice.
ALSO GROWS
gazar: To cut or divide.
גָּזַר
The root makes the people’s sense of separation concrete.
gezerah: A decree or decision.
גְּזֵרָה
This related form deepens the feeling that the severance has been declared final.
THE PATTERN
A confession of final loss can be spoken truthfully without becoming the final word over life.
Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones, Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live. Why are you bowed down, O my living soul? Why do you roar over me? Wait upon God. I shall yet extend my hands to him for the deliverances of his face.Jesus said to her, I am the rising, and the life. Whoever leans their weight into me, even if they die, will live.THE THREAD
Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you lowered us. And you shall gather to yourself, into your house, your father, and your mother, and your brothers, and all your father's household.תִּקְוָה (tiqvah, hope or expectation) is the word the people say has perished here, and the same word is used for the scarlet cord in Joshua 2:18. The word joins inner expectation to a visible line that marks a household for deliverance.
