This verse in the King James

King James wording
Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.

The grave opens as the first movement: the risen are brought all the way back into a land.

The promise moves from opened graves, to people rising, to their arrival in a named land. Its hope is bodily and communal: life comes out of burial into a place. The reader hears that death does not own the final boundary when God opens it and brings people through.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that burial is an irreversible boundary and that a people who are buried can never return to life and place.

פּוֹתֵחַ

pōtēaḥ

GROWS FROM

פ־ת־ח

p-t-ḥ

Open; open up; make an entrance.

“open” in this verse is pōtēaḥ. The grave is not only left behind; God opens its boundary. The related word petach means an opening or doorway, so what enclosed the people becomes a passage out.

ALSO GROWS

petach: An opening, doorway, or entrance.

פֶּתַח

The grave’s opened boundary becomes a passage rather than the final wall.

pittuach: A carved or engraved design.

פִּתּוּחַ

This branch also carries the sense of opening a surface, echoing the grave’s boundary being opened.

וְהַעֲלֵיתִי

weha'aleti

GROWS FROM

ע־ל־ה

ʿ-l-h

Go up, rise, ascend; in this form, bring up.

“cause you to come up” in this verse is weha'aleti. The people do not merely leave the grave; they are raised out of it. The verb puts the action in God’s hands, carrying them upward from the place of burial.

ALSO GROWS

ʿalah: To go upward or rise.

עָלָה

It names the upward movement that the grave itself cannot produce.

maʿaleh: An ascent or upward way.

מַעֲלֶה

The verse turns burial’s downward movement toward an ascent.

אַדְמַת

admat

GROWS FROM

א־ד־ם

ʾ-d-m

Ground or soil; the A-D-M word family also names the human.

“land” in this verse is admat. The destination is adamah, ground or soil, and its word-family echoes Adam, the human formed from ground in Genesis 2:7. Restoration here ends in embodied, located life, not in an abstraction.

ALSO GROWS

adam: A human being; Adam.

אָדָם

Genesis 2:7 links the human with adamah, the ground from which the human is formed.

adom: Red or ruddy.

אֲדֹם

This word belongs to the A-D-M family, whose concrete associations include the color of soil.

Across these texts, death’s enclosure yields what it holds when God’s power calls the dead forth.

Your dead will live; together with my corpse they will rise. Awake and ring out, you who camp in the dust, for your dew is a dew of lights, and the earth will drop the slackened ones.
Isaiah 26:19 · SDVThe dead rise from the dust, and the earth itself releases them.
And when he had said these things, he cried out with a great voice, Lazarus, come out! The one who had died came out, his hands and feet bound in strips of cloth, and a cloth wrapped his face. Jesus said to them, Untie him, and let him go.
John 11:43-44 · SDVA voice calls a dead man out of the tomb, and he comes forth into the living community.
And the sea gives up the dead who are in it; and death and the unseen give up the dead who are in them; and each one is judged according to their works.
Revelation 20:13 · SDVEven death and the grave give up the dead they hold.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDV

Genesis 2:7 links ⁨אָדָם⁩ (ʾādām, “human”) with ⁨אֲדָמָה⁩ (ʾădāmāh, “ground; soil”): the human is formed from the ground. Ezekiel’s destination is ⁨אֲדָמַת יִשְׂרָאֵל⁩ (admat Yisra’el, “the ground or land of Israel”), so the raised people arrive in embodied, located life.
