King James wording
King James Version
Son of man, set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him,THE KEY
The face turns toward Gog before the word is spoken against him: confrontation begins with deliberate orientation.
THE MEANING
You are addressed as a human being, and your attention turns toward a named adversary. The prophetic word meets that adversary directly. The verse joins attention and speech: the face is oriented first, then the word is aimed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the idea that prophecy is only forecasting: here the prophetic word is a direct address against a named power.
THE ROOT
פָּנֶיךָ
panekha
GROWS FROM
פנה
p-n-h
Turn, turn toward.
The Hebrew first directs the face toward Gog, using אֶל (el, toward), then directs the prophecy עָלָיו (alav, against him). The face is not passive description here: it marks the direction of attention before the word takes aim.
ALSO GROWS
panim: Face, presence.
פָּנִים
The face can carry the sense of presence: turning the face toward Gog brings him directly into view.
panah: Turn, turn toward.
פָּנָה
This root links the face with orientation; the verse’s confrontation begins by turning toward its named target.
הִנָּבֵא
hinnabe
GROWS FROM
נבא
n-b-ʾ
Speak as a prophet; utter prophetic speech.
“prophesy” in this verse is hinnabe. The command uses the same prophetic root found in the words for prophet and prophecy. Here the word is directed against Gog, so prophecy appears as an act of address, not only as a statement about what will happen.
ALSO GROWS
navi: Prophet.
נָבִיא
The prophet is the one who carries this kind of directed speech.
nevuah: Prophecy, prophetic utterance.
נְבוּאָה
This branch names the utterance itself, the word that the verse sends against Gog.
בֶּן־אָדָם
ben-adam
GROWS FROM
אדם
ʾ-d-m
Human, earth-being; linked with אֲדָמָה (adamah, ground).
“Son of man” in this verse is ben-adam. The address names the hearer as ben adam, a human being, while adam is joined by sound and sense to adamah, ground. The command to face the named power is given to earth-born humanity, not to an abstract voice.
ALSO GROWS
adam: Human being, person.
אָדָם
This is the human named in the address, the one who turns toward Gog and speaks.
adamah: Ground, soil.
אֲדָמָה
The kinship between adam and adamah holds the human as ground-born within the phrase “Son of man.”
THE PATTERN
Prophetic speech gives its target direct address instead of leaving opposition vague.
Son of man, I have set you as a watchman over the house of Israel; therefore hear and respond to the word from my mouth, and warn them from me.And the LORD took me from behind the flock, and the LORD said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel. And when they had prayed, the place where they were gathered was shaken, and they were all filled with the Set-Apart Breath and spoke the word of God with boldness.THE THREAD
Again he said to me, Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear and respond to the word of the LORD.The same Hebrew root for “prophesy” appears here, where the word is directed to dry bones. In Ezekiel 38:2 it is directed against Gog; in both, the target of the speech is part of the act.
