King James wording
King James Version
Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:THE KEY
The verse directs divine opposition at the head of power, naming the ruler rather than leaving the threat faceless.
THE MEANING
You encounter a direct declaration: the LORD is against Gog, named as chief prince over Meshech and Tubal. The confrontation reaches the head of power itself, not just an unnamed danger. The prophetic word makes that opposition audible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that a ruler’s reach makes him untouchable.
THE ROOT
רֹאשׁ
rosh
GROWS FROM
ראש
rosh
Head, top, or first.
“head lifted one” in this verse is rosh. The root of “chief” carries the concrete image of a head or summit. Its branch רֵאשִׁית (reshith), “beginning” or “first,” also carries primacy, placing Gog at the point where authority gathers.
ALSO GROWS
rosh: Head; top; leader or chief.
רֹאשׁ
It gives “chief” the image of a head, the place where this power is concentrated.
reshith: Beginning; first; first fruits.
רֵאשִׁית
Its sense of being first echoes the primacy expressed by the title “chief.”
נְשִׂיא
nasi
GROWS FROM
נשא
nasa
Lift, carry, or bear.
“head lifted one” in this verse is nasi. English “prince” gives rank without an image; nasi is associated with nasa, “lift, carry, bear.” The shared seed with massa, “burden” or “oracle,” lets the title hold both elevation and what is borne.
ALSO GROWS
nasa: To lift, carry, or bear.
נָשָׂא
The root links the elevated leader with the act of carrying or bearing.
massa: A burden or load; also an oracle.
מַשָּׂא
This branch keeps the root’s sense of bearing present alongside the authority of the prince.
הִנָּבֵא
hinave
GROWS FROM
נבא
n-b-ʾ
Prophesy; speak as a prophet.
The same seed gives both the prophet and the prophecy, joining the speaker’s role to the utterance. Here the command to prophesy is followed by “say,” making the word an address directed at Gog.
ALSO GROWS
navi: Prophet.
נָבִיא
The prophet is named by the same root as the act Ezekiel is commanded to perform.
nevuah: Prophecy or oracle.
נְבוּאָה
The oracle and the act of prophesying share one seed, linking the spoken message to its source.
THE PATTERN
Divine speech names hostile rule and declares its limit before the conflict is resolved.
And say, Thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I am against you, Gog, the raised head of Meshech and Tubal. And it shall be, when the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, that I will visit upon the fruit of the swelling heart of the king of Assyria, and the adorning of his lifted eyes. And from his mouth goes out a sharp sword, so that with it he strikes the nations, and he shepherds them with a rod of iron, and he treads the winepress of the seething and swelling anger of God the all-ruling.THE THREAD
Again he said to me, Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear and respond to the word of the LORD.Both passages use the Hebrew root נבא (n-b-ʾ), “prophesy.” Here Ezekiel speaks to dry bones; in 39:1 he speaks against Gog, showing the same prophetic act directed toward radically different targets.
