King James wording
King James Version
Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.THE KEY
God’s face is no longer hidden when his breath is poured out among the people.
THE MEANING
The LORD is no longer hidden from you: he pours his breath upon the people. One Hebrew word holds breath, wind, and spirit together, picturing his presence as living movement among them. The verse joins being seen with receiving what animates life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that the LORD’s presence stays inaccessible. His hidden face gives way as his breath is poured out among the people.
THE ROOT
רוּחִי
ruchi
GROWS FROM
רוּחַ
ruach
To blow or breathe; moving air that enters, animates, or passes through.
English divides this word into “spirit,” “wind,” and “breath,” but Hebrew holds them together. The same consonants echo words for room and relief: outpoured breath is presence moving into the open, as breath animates a living body.
ALSO GROWS
revach: Space, interval, room.
רֶוַח
The same consonants form a word for space, opening an echo between breath and spaciousness.
ravach: To find relief or gain room to breathe.
רָוַח
This echo of relief deepens the image of a hidden face giving way to presence moving freely among the people.
שָׁפַכְתִּי
shafakhti
GROWS FROM
שׁפך
shafakh
To pour out, spill, or shed.
“poured out” in this verse is shafakhti. The Hebrew verb describes an outpouring, and its force depends on what is poured. Here the LORD pours out his breath, making the action a giving of presence.
ALSO GROWS
shofekh: One who pours out or sheds.
שֹׁפֵךְ
This active form shows the root describing the one who releases the substance; here, the LORD is the source of the outpouring.
yishafekh: Will be poured out or shed.
יִשָּׁפֵךְ
This passive form shows the same root describing what happens to what is poured; the verse presents the LORD as the one who acts.
THE PATTERN
The outpoured breath makes divine presence visible among a people.
And it shall be afterward, that I will pour out my breath upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your elders will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. And it will come to pass in the last days, God says, I will pour out my breath upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. And those of the circumcision who trusted were beside themselves, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Set-Apart Breath had been poured out upon the Gentiles also.THE THREAD
And it shall be afterward, that I will pour out my breath upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your elders will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.Joel uses the same Hebrew verb for pouring out the LORD’s breath, then shows that outpouring through speech and vision. Ezekiel names its effect as the end of the hidden face; Joel opens its reach to all flesh.
