King James wording
King James Version
In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south.THE KEY
The vision raises your vantage until the city’s built form becomes visible.
THE MEANING
You are brought into a way of seeing that gives a city shape and orientation. From the very high mountain, the scene is legible as a built form, not a shapeless impression. The verse speaks now of revelation as sight that lets structure come into view.
THE ROOT
מַרְאוֹת
mar'ot
GROWS FROM
רָאָה
ra'ah
to see, look, perceive
The word for visions grows from the root for seeing, keeping revelation close to perception itself. Here, that seeing brings a city’s definite form into view.
ALSO GROWS
ro'eh: a seer; one who sees
רֹאֶה
This branch makes the person receiving the vision part of the same language of seeing.
mar'eh: appearance, sight
מַרְאֶה
A vision is also an appearance: what is seen takes a visible shape.
מִבְנֵה
mivneh
GROWS FROM
בָּנָה
banah
to build, construct
“building of a city” in this verse is mivneh. The word translated “frame” names a structure, and its root is the act of building. The vision presents the city as something with a discernible built form, not an undefined image.
ALSO GROWS
boneh: builder; one who builds
בּוֹנֶה
This branch keeps the city’s visible structure connected to the work of building.
nivneh: being built
נִבְנֶה
The same root can describe a structure as something taking shape through building.
THE PATTERN
Revelation makes divine order visible as a form that can be seen.
And see that you make them according to their form, which was shown to you on the mountain. And it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among those carried away by the river Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw the sights of God.And he carries me away in the breath to a great and high mountain, and points out to me the great city, the set-apart Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven.THE THREAD
And it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, as I was among those carried away by the river Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw the sights of God.Ezekiel 1:1 uses the same phrase, “visions of God,” rooted in רָאָה (ra’ah, to see or perceive). There the heavens open; here that seeing places you high above a city whose form can be grasped.
