King James wording
King James Version
And at the side without, as one goeth up to the entry of the north gate, were two tables; and on the other side, which was at the porch of the gate, were two tables.THE KEY
The gate does not merely open a way in; it places what is set forth along the approach itself.
THE MEANING
As you approach, tables already stand at the threshold: two outside the entry and two by the porch. The way into the set-apart place is arranged for preparation, so entry begins before you cross inside.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The false belief is that encounter begins only after you cross the threshold; here, preparation is built into the approach itself.
THE ROOT
שֻׁלְחָנוֹת
shulḥanot
GROWS FROM
שׁלח
sh-l-ḥ
Send, send forth, release, extend the hand.
Shulchan grows from the root שׁלח, whose sense is to send forth, release, or extend; the table is where what is set forth can meet the one approaching. Four tables line the gate’s entry and porch, making that extension part of the architecture of arrival.
ALSO GROWS
shalach: send forth, release, extend the hand
שָׁלַח
This verb carries the movement behind the tables: what is sent or extended reaches the approach.
Shiloach: sent forth; a water channel or pool
שִׁלֹחַ
The sent-forth water makes the root’s movement tangible, as the tables place what is extended at the point of entry.
shulḥan: table; a place where provision is set forth
שֻׁלְחָן
The singular form names each table repeated on both sides of the gate’s approach.
THE PATTERN
Across Scripture, the approach to presence is furnished with what is set before or shared.
And you set upon the table the bread of the face before me always. You lay out a table before my face, in full view of those who press me. You make my head rich with oil; my cup is soaked full.Look, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.THE THREAD
And you set upon the table the bread of the face before me always.Ezekiel’s gate holds four tables; Exodus uses the same Hebrew word for the table bearing bread before God continually. The shared word ties the approach to a place where what is set forth meets presence.
