King James wording
King James Version
And when these days are expired, it shall be, that upon the eighth day, and so forward, the priests shall make your burnt offerings upon the altar, and your peace offerings; and I will accept you, saith the Lord GOD.THE KEY
The closing promise accepts the people themselves, while the Hebrew name for the peace offering carries the root of wholeness.
THE MEANING
A completed season gives way to an eighth day and what continues beyond it. The offerings at the altar carry the language of ascent and wholeness. The promise reaches beyond what you bring: the LORD GOD says, “I will accept you.”
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief this undoes is that only the offering can be accepted while the person remains outside the promise.
THE ROOT
וְרָצִאתִי
wĕrāṣîtî
GROWS FROM
רצה
רָצָה (rāṣāh): to be pleased with, show favor toward, accept.
“receive” in this verse is wĕrāṣîtî. The root describes favorable reception. Its verb family can name both the one who receives favor and the one who is received; here the promise makes you, not only the offering, its object.
ALSO GROWS
rāṣāh: Be pleased with; accept.
רָצָה
This is the base verb behind the promise of acceptance.
nirṣāh: Be accepted; be favorably received.
נִרְצָה
This related form makes clear that a person can be the one received.
שַׁלְמֵיכֶם
shalmeikhem
GROWS FROM
שלם
שָׁלֵם (shalem): whole, complete, intact.
“wholeness offerings” in this verse is shalmeikhem. English “peace” can sound like conflict has simply stopped; this root also carries the sense of being whole and intact. The offering named from it stands beside the promise that the LORD accepts the worshippers themselves.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Peace; wholeness.
שָׁלוֹם
It shares the root and opens the peace offering to the sense of wholeness.
shalem: Whole; complete; intact.
שָׁלֵם
This form makes the root’s sense of wholeness explicit.
עֹלוֹתֵיכֶם
ʿolotekhem
GROWS FROM
עלה
עָלָה (ʿālāh): go up, ascend.
“ascending offerings” in this verse is ʿolotekhem. The Hebrew name for a burnt offering is עֹלָה (ʿolāh), from the verb for ascending. The verse sets the rising offering beside the wholeness offering, then closes with acceptance of the people.
ALSO GROWS
ʿālāh: Go up; ascend.
עָלָה
This is the verb behind the name of the burnt offering.
ʿaliyāh: Ascent; going up.
עֲלִיָּה
This related noun keeps the movement of rising visible in the offering’s name.
THE PATTERN
God’s acceptance reaches the person who comes before him, not only what is brought.
And he shall lean his hand upon the head of the rising offering, and it shall be pleasing for him, to cover over him.The slaughtered offerings of God are a broken breath; a broken and crushed heart, O God, you do not despise. To the praise of the weight of his favor, by which he has favored us in the beloved.THE THREAD
The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with wholeness.“Peace” here is שָׁלוֹם (shalom), from the same root שלם as the peace offerings in Ezekiel. That shared root opens the offering beyond calm: it carries the sense of wholeness that the LORD gives his people.
