King James wording
King James Version
And it shall be unto them for an inheritance: I am their inheritance: and ye shall give them no possession in Israel: I am their possession.THE KEY
The LORD is both the inheritance they receive and the possession they hold.
THE MEANING
You may picture inheritance as something passed into your hands; this verse names the LORD himself as both the inheritance received and the possession held. An empty land allotment does not mean an empty inheritance: the one who is held is also the one who gives.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a life without property has no inheritance: the LORD himself is named as the inheritance and possession.
THE ROOT
נַחֲלָה
naḥălāh
GROWS FROM
נחל
to inherit or receive as an allotted possession
The word carries the sense of a portion received, and the verse identifies that portion as the LORD himself. What is inherited here is not merely something God gives; God is named as the inheritance.
ALSO GROWS
nāḥal: to inherit or receive as an inheritance
נָחַל
The verb shows inheritance as something received, illuminating the LORD as the portion given.
hinḥîl: to cause someone to inherit or assign as an inheritance
הִנְחִיל
This form highlights the giver behind the inheritance, while the verse makes the giver himself the inheritance.
אֲחֻזָּה
ʾăḥuzzāh
GROWS FROM
אחז
to grasp, seize, or hold
This word for a possession grows from the act of holding fast. The verse names the LORD as the possession, making the one held more than an estate or tract of land.
ALSO GROWS
ʾāḥaz: to grasp, seize, or hold
אָחַז
The root verb gives the concrete sense beneath possession: something held as one’s own.
ʾāḥūz: held or possessed
אָחוּז
This form echoes the verse’s claim that the LORD is what is held.
THE PATTERN
An inheritance can be a presence held as one’s portion, not merely property received.
The LORD is the portion of my share and of my cup; you hold fast my lot.The LORD is my portion, says my living soul; therefore I wait for him.As ones in pain, yet always rejoicing; as emptied ones, yet making many rich; as ones holding nothing, yet holding all things fast.THE THREAD
Therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance, as the LORD your God spoke to him.Deuteronomy uses the same Hebrew word נַחֲלָה (naḥălāh, inheritance) to name the LORD as Levi’s inheritance. It opens Ezekiel’s claim further: the promised portion is not only something from God, but God himself.
