King James wording
King James Version
Ye shall have just balances, and a just ephah, and a just bath.THE KEY
Justice here has a measure: the same word marks the balances, the grain measure, and the liquid measure.
THE MEANING
The verse locates fairness in ordinary exchanges: the quantity named and the amount measured belong under one standard. Its repeated measure makes justice visible in the tools used for grain and liquid now.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Fairness is only an inward intention or a public ideal, untouched by the quantities exchanged in daily life.
THE ROOT
צֶדֶק
tsedeq
GROWS FROM
צדק
Alignment; what is right or set in proper relation.
“aligned” in this verse is tsedeq. The same Hebrew word for alignment describes the balances, the ephah, and the bath, so justice reaches into the quantities people exchange. English can make “just” sound like a general quality; the repeated root makes it a standard carried by each measuring tool.
ALSO GROWS
tzedakah: Alignment expressed as justice or right action.
צְדָקָה
This branch shows the same root’s alignment extending from the measure itself into how people act toward one another.
tsaddiq: A person who is just or aligned.
צַדִּיק
Here the root describes a person as well as a measure: both are evaluated by whether they are set right.
THE PATTERN
A measure becomes a moral act when its standard determines what another person receives.
Scales and stones of alignment, an ephah and a hin of alignment, you shall have; I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.Stone and another stone, measure and another measure, both alike are what the LORD recoils from. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged, and with what measure you measure, it will be measured to you.THE THREAD
Scales and stones of alignment, an ephah and a hin of alignment, you shall have; I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.Ezekiel repeats צֶדֶק (tsedeq, alignment) across balances, grain, and liquid; Leviticus uses the same word across balances, weights, and measures. The shared root reveals one standard of alignment running through every quantity people exchange.
