King James wording
King James Version
This is the oblation that ye shall offer; the sixth part of an ephah of an homer of wheat, and ye shall give the sixth part of an ephah of an homer of barley:THE KEY
The offering is a lifted portion of the harvest, the Hebrew verb translated “offer” carries the image of raising a share out of the whole.
THE MEANING
The share is exact: from each homer of wheat and from each homer of barley, one sixth of an ephah is given. The same measure applies to both grains, making the offering a portion lifted from the harvest itself.
THE ROOT
תְּרוּמָה
terumah
GROWS FROM
רוּם
rum
Rise or be high; in a causative form, lift or raise.
“lifted portion; lift” in this verse is terumah. The Hebrew noun תְּרוּמָה (terumah, a lifted offering) and verb תָּרִימוּ (tarimu, you shall lift up) share the root רוּם (rum, rise or be high). The offering is pictured as a measured share raised out of the grain that sustains life.
ALSO GROWS
ram: High, elevated.
רָם
This form preserves the root’s sense of height, the image carried into a portion lifted up as an offering.
tarimu: You shall lift up.
תָּרִימוּ
This is the verb translated “offer” in the verse, so the act of offering is directly linked to lifting.
THE PATTERN
A share of what sustains life becomes visible when it is named, measured, and set apart.
And all the tenth of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD's; it is set apart to the LORD.You take the first of all the fruit of the ground that you bring from the land the LORD your God gives you, and put it in a basket, and go to the place the LORD your God chooses, to cause his nature to dwell there. On the first day of the week, let each of you lay something by at his own side, storing it up, as his way has gone well for him, so that no gatherings are made when I come.THE THREAD
Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring me a lifted offering. From every man whose heart stirs him to give, you take my lifted offering.Exodus uses the same Hebrew noun, תְּרוּמָה (terumah, a lifted offering), that names Ezekiel’s measured grain share. Here the offering is given willingly from the heart, connecting a tangible portion with the manner of its giving.
