This verse in the King James

King James wording
And it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh.

The river heals the waters themselves, so life multiplies when what sustains it is restored.

The verse speaks now: wherever the river reaches, life stirs because even the water itself is healed. What seemed unable to sustain life becomes a place where living things multiply.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that barrenness is permanent, that life must manufacture its own way back, is undone here: the waters can be healed, and life follows their renewal.

וְיֵרָפְאוּ

veyērāfēʾū

GROWS FROM

רפא

to heal, restore health

The Hebrew says the waters themselves are healed; the fish are not the only ones changed by the river’s arrival. The same root names the physician and the healing, gathering the healer and restoration into one word family.

ALSO GROWS

rōfēʾ: A healer or physician

רֹפֵא

The physician’s name grows from the same root as the waters’ healing: both carry the work of restoration.

rəfūʾāh: Healing or cure

רְפוּאָה

This branch names the restoration itself, showing that healing is the condition the river brings to the waters.

חַיָּה

ḥayyāh

GROWS FROM

חיה

to live, be alive, revive

“every living soul” in this verse is ḥayyāh. The phrase ⁨נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה⁩ (nefesh ḥayyāh, “living soul”) names a living being, not an abstract life detached from one. The root also appears in words for “living” and “life,” so the verse moves from living souls to life filling the whole place.

ALSO GROWS

ḥay: Alive or living

חַי

This is the same life quality carried by the living beings reached by the river.

ḥayyim: Life

חַיִּים

The root widens from a living being to life itself, the abundance the healed waters sustain.

Restorative waters carry life into places that depend on them.

And a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it was split and became four heads.
Genesis 2:10 · SDVThe river waters the garden and branches outward, making one source sustain a widening landscape.
The one who leans his weight into me, as the writing has said, rivers of living waters will flow from his belly.
John 7:38 · SDVThe image of living water flowing outward shows life moving through a person and reaching beyond them.
In the middle of its broad way, and on either bank of the river, is the tree of life, bearing twelve fruits, giving back its fruit with each moon. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
Revelation 22:2 · SDVHere the river stands beside the tree of life, while its leaves bring healing to the nations.
In the middle of its broad way, and on either bank of the river, is the tree of life, bearing twelve fruits, giving back its fruit with each moon. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
Revelation 22:2 · SDV

Ezekiel’s river heals the waters, while Revelation’s river runs beside the tree of life, whose leaves heal the nations. Both visions join flowing water, restored life, and healing, carrying the same pattern from a landscape to all nations.
