King James wording
King James Version
Destruction cometh; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none.THE KEY
Here, “peace” is wholeness, and the verse shows destruction arriving as people reach for it, with none to be found.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks now wherever destruction is pressing in: the search for wholeness becomes urgent, yet urgency alone does not make it available. It names the painful gap plainly, people seek peace, and there is none.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that wanting peace or searching for it guarantees that it is present: here the search meets absence.
THE ROOT
שָׁלוֹם
shalom
GROWS FROM
שלם
sh-l-m
Completeness, wholeness, soundness.
The root carries the sense of completeness and soundness, so “peace” reaches beyond quiet: it is wholeness. The seekers reach for that wholeness as destruction comes, and the verse states plainly that it is absent.
ALSO GROWS
shalem: Complete, whole.
שָׁלֵם
This branch shows that shalom is a condition of wholeness, not simply the absence of conflict.
shillem: Repay, recompense, make good.
שִׁלֵּם
The same root links wholeness with making good what is owed; the missing shalom points to a deeper rupture, not merely a lack of calm.
THE PATTERN
At the point of crisis, seeking or proclaiming peace does not guarantee that wholeness is present.
Because, even because they have made my people wander, saying, Wholeness; and there was no wholeness; and one built up a wall, and, behold, others daubed it with tasteless plaster. They heal the breaking of the daughter of my people with a light hand, saying, Wholeness, wholeness, when there is no wholeness. When they say, "Wholeness and firm footing," then sudden ruin stands over them, like labor pains upon a woman carrying a child in her womb, and they will not escape.THE THREAD
Turn aside from evil and do good; seek wholeness and pursue it.The same Hebrew word, shalom, appears in both verses, alongside the same verb for seeking. Ezekiel shows the search meeting absence as destruction comes; the psalm joins seeking wholeness with pursuing it.
