King James wording
King James Version
And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise the LORD, after the ordinance of David king of Israel.THE KEY
The foundation is accompanied by praise from the start: rebuilding takes shape as a shared sound before the house itself is complete.
THE MEANING
Builders lay the base while priests and Levites take their places with trumpet and cymbal, each contributing to one shared work. Praise is already part of the foundation’s present shape, in a pattern bearing David’s name (דָּוִד, Dāwîd, “beloved”).
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Praise belongs only after the building is complete; while the foundation is being laid, the work is merely construction.
THE ROOT
וְיִסְּדוּ
wĕyissĕdû
GROWS FROM
יסד
y-s-d
to found, establish, or set in place
“laid” in this verse is wĕyissĕdû. The Hebrew verb carries the act of founding in the same root that names a foundation or basis. The builders are not merely working near a foundation: their action is the establishing of the house’s base.
ALSO GROWS
yāsad: to found, establish
יָסַד
This verb names the builders’ act of laying the foundation.
yesod: foundation, basis
יְסוֹד
The noun shares the seed of the action: what is founded becomes the support beneath the house.
mosad: foundation, established base
מוֹסָד
This branch keeps the verse’s emphasis on what is set in place to support what follows.
לְהַלֵּל
lĕhallel
GROWS FROM
הלל
h-l-l
to praise, celebrate
The verse’s praise is voiced through trumpet and cymbal, making it a shared expression rather than an inward thought alone. Related Hebrew words keep praise connected to song and the call to praise Yah.
ALSO GROWS
hālal: to praise, celebrate
הָלַל
This is the root carried by the verse’s act of praising the LORD.
tehillah: praise, song of praise
תְּהִלָּה
This branch joins praise to the voiced and musical response surrounding the foundation.
hallelû-Yāh: Praise Yah
הַלְלוּיָהּ
The familiar call preserves the same praise-root heard in the verse.
בְּנֵי אָסָף
bĕnê ʾĀsāp
GROWS FROM
אסף
ʾ-s-p
to gather, collect, bring together
“sons of Asaph” in this verse is bĕnê ʾĀsāp. Asaph’s name carries the sense of gathering: the cymbal players enter the scene with a name rooted in collecting and bringing together. Alongside David (דָּוִד, Dāwîd, “beloved”), the names in the verse carry nature as well as identifying people.
ALSO GROWS
ʾāsap: to gather, collect
אָסַף
The root gives Asaph’s name the nature of gathering.
ʾāsēpâ: assembly, gathering
אֲסֵפָה
This branch echoes the many roles gathered around the newly laid foundation.
ʾāsîp: ingathering, harvest
אָסִיף
The gathering sense extends to bringing in what has grown, a fitting resonance beside the builders’ work of establishing a house.
THE PATTERN
A sacred dwelling takes visible form through structure and a shared offering from distinct members.
And it came to be, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one voice heard in praising and in extending the hands to the LORD; and when they lifted their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of song, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; his faithful love is for the ages. Then the house was filled with a cloud, the house of the LORD.You also, as living stones, are built up into a house of breath, a set-apart priesthood, to carry up sacrifices of breath, well received by God through Jesus, the Anointed One.THE THREAD
And they sang back to one another in praise, extending the hand in thanks unto the LORD, for he is good, for his faithful love endures for the ages toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. The next verse repeats the praise-root הָלַל (hālal) in “praising” and “praised,” then names the laid foundation as the reason for the people’s shout. Praise is the audible counterpart to the foundation in this scene.
