King James wording
King James Version
And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia:THE KEY
Before the message reaches the assemblies, it already arrives in the company of siblings: the word begins inside shared kinship.
THE MEANING
The greeting names companions at the speaker’s side and assemblies across Galatia as its recipients. The word arrives within a network of kinship and reaches more than one gathered community. As you encounter it, you are addressed as part of a shared people, not as an isolated receiver.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It loosens the belief that scripture is addressed only to isolated individuals. This greeting places both its voice and its hearers inside relationships of shared life.
THE ROOT
ἀδελφοί
adelphoi
GROWS FROM
δελφύς
delphys
Womb; ἀδελφός (adelphos) is formed with this word for womb, carrying the image of shared birth.
“brothers” in this verse is adelphoi. The Greek sibling-word is formed around delphys, “womb,” so kinship is pictured as shared origin. That depth makes “all the brethren which are with me” more than a roster beside the speaker: the greeting begins with a people already bound in relation before it reaches the plural assemblies.
ALSO GROWS
adelphē: sister
ἀδελφή
The feminine sibling word belongs to the same family, showing that this kinship term names a shared relation, not only a male role.
adelphotēs: brotherhood, sibling community
ἀδελφότης
The same word family extends from siblings to a community, echoing the shared life gathered in “all the brethren.”
THE PATTERN
The people who carry and receive the word are named as a community bound to one another.
A Song of degrees of David. Look, how good and how sweet it is for brothers to settle also together! And they held fast in the teaching of the sent ones, and in sharing in common, and in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.Honor all people. Love the brothers. Stand in awe of God. Honor the king.THE THREAD
For both the one who sets apart and those who are set apart are all from one. For this reason he does not blush to call them brothers. The word translated “brethren” comes from the same Greek word family as the brethren named in Galatians. Hebrews makes the shared source explicit with “all of one,” opening the kinship already present in this greeting.
