This verse in the King James

King James wording
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Even a messenger from heaven is measured by the message, not the message by the messenger.

The verse speaks now: a heavenly appearance or sacred title cannot make a different good news trustworthy. The announcement is measured against the gospel already given, and the messenger’s rank cannot overrule that measure. The verdict stays severe: the one who crosses that boundary is accursed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that a supernatural source or trusted messenger makes every message true.

εὐαγγελίζηται

euangelizētai

GROWS FROM

ἀγγελ-

angel-

announce, bring a message

“Preach” and “gospel” share the ⁨ἀγγελ-⁩ stem: the announcement and the good message are bound together in the Greek. Yet the verse calls a different message accursed even when its speaker appears to come from heaven; the messenger does not make the message true.

ALSO GROWS

angelos: messenger

ἄγγελος

The word translated “angel” names a messenger, connecting the heavenly figure directly to the act of announcing.

euangelizō: announce good news

εὐαγγελίζω

This verb is the form behind “preach” here, sharing its stem with ⁨εὐαγγέλιον⁩, “gospel.”

A messenger’s status or signs do not override the message being announced.

You shall not hear and respond to the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, for the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your living soul.
Deuteronomy 13:3 · SDVEven a prophet whose signs come to pass does not make the message trustworthy when it draws the hearer away.
These were of nobler birth than those in Thessalonica, who received the word with all eagerness of heart, and sifted the writings daily, whether these things held so.
Acts 17:11 · SDVThe hearers receive the announcement while testing whether its claims hold.
Beloved, do not lean your weight on every breath, but test the breaths, whether they come out of God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 John 4:1 · SDVA spiritual claim still calls for discernment; its source cannot be assumed from its presentation.
And no marvel, for the Adversary himself is reshaped into a messenger of light.
2 Corinthians 11:14 · SDV

“Angel” here is the same Greek word, ⁨ἄγγελος⁩ (angelos), meaning “messenger.” The shared word sharpens Galatians’ warning: a messenger can appear to carry light, so appearance alone cannot certify the message.
