This verse in the King James

King James wording
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

The verse exposes the weight of claiming standing by performance: its measure is not some of the instruction, but all of it.

When your standing rests on doing the instruction, this verse sets the measure at continuing in everything written and doing it. If that continuity fails, the verse names the position as cursed. Its pressure falls on the whole demand, not on a tally of isolated good deeds.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that enough obedience can establish a secure standing while the parts left undone do not count.

ἐμμένῃ

emmenē

GROWS FROM

μένω

menō

Remain, stay, abide.

The word translated “continueth” carries the sense of remaining in something, not merely touching it once. Paired with “all things,” it makes the verse’s demand one of sustained, whole adherence.

ALSO GROWS

menō: Remain, stay, abide.

μένω

This is the root beneath “continueth”; it brings out the idea of staying within the instruction over time.

monē: Dwelling, place to remain.

μονή

This related word is rendered “mansions” in John 14:2, linking the word family of remaining with a place of dwelling.

Where standing is measured by keeping the whole instruction, the text treats what is left undone as consequential too.

Cursed be he who does not raise up all the words of this instruction to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen.
Deuteronomy 27:26 · SDVThe verse states the same whole measure: the words are to be upheld and done, all of them.
For whoever guards the whole instruction, and yet stumbles at one point, is bound to all of it.
James 2:10 · SDVJames makes explicit how one failure bears on a claim to have kept the whole instruction.
Therefore by the works of the instruction no flesh will be aligned before his face, for through the instruction comes the full knowing of falling short.
Romans 3:20 · SDVRomans likewise denies that deeds of the law secure a standing before God.
Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it stays in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.
John 15:4 · SDV

The word translated “abide” is ⁨μείνατε⁩ (meinate, “remain”), from the same root ⁨μένω⁩ (menō, “remain, abide”) that underlies ⁨ἐμμένῃ⁩ (emmenē, “continue”) in Galatians. John pictures remaining as sustained connection, opening up the force of “continueth” in this verse.
