King James wording
King James Version
Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.THE KEY
Not knowing God does not leave you without a master; it leaves your service vulnerable to things that are gods only by claim.
THE MEANING
When you do not know or perceive God, your impulse to serve does not disappear; it attaches to what is called divine but is not divine by nature. The verse shows how something without divine nature can still hold a person in service.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that devotion proves its object is worthy of devotion: a person can be bound to something that is no god by nature.
THE ROOT
ἐδουλεύσατε
edouleusate
GROWS FROM
δουλεύω
douleuō
To serve as a slave, or to be enslaved to.
“served” in this verse is edouleusate. English “did service” can sound like a simple action, but this Greek verb carries the condition of serving under another’s power. Not knowing God does not leave a person neutral: service still binds, but to what has no divine nature.
ALSO GROWS
doulos: Servant or slave.
δοῦλος
The related noun names the person in the condition implied by the verb: service can mean belonging to another’s authority.
douleia: Slavery or bondage.
δουλεία
This related word makes explicit the binding condition already present in “did service”; the next verse speaks of bondage again.
φύσει
physei
GROWS FROM
φύω
phýō
To grow, come into being, or bring forth.
“by nature” in this verse is physei. The phrase distinguishes what receives divine service from what possesses divine nature. The claim concerns what these powers are in themselves, not simply what people call them.
ALSO GROWS
physis: Nature or constitution.
φύσις
This noun names the inherent character that “by nature” points to: the objects of service do not possess the divine nature.
physikos: Natural, according to nature.
φυσικός
This related form carries the same sense of what belongs to a thing’s nature, underscoring the gap between a divine claim and what something actually is.
THE PATTERN
When the living God is not recognized, human service can still be captured by substitutes.
You shall have no other gods before my face.who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and bowed down and served the creation beside the one who created, who is praised for the ages. Amen. You know that when you were of the nations, you were carried away to voiceless idols, as you were led.THE THREAD
But now, after you have known God, or rather have been known by God, how do you turn back again to the weak and emptied elements, to which you desire to serve again? The Greek repeats the same knowing root in “have known God” and “are known of God.” That turn reveals a deeper change than perception alone: the one who once served what was no god is now known by God, making that former bondage no longer fitting.
