This verse in the King James

King James wording
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

The future harvest is already implicit in what you plant.

What you set in motion keeps growing beyond the moment you choose it. Its harvest carries the nature of the seed, and no denial can make the planting unreal.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that an action disappears when the moment passes or that its consequences can simply be dismissed.

σπείρῃ

speirē

GROWS FROM

σπειρ-

speir-

to sow or scatter seed

“sows” in this verse is speirē. Sowing belongs to a seed-family: it is the placement of life with the capacity to multiply. What you plant persists in the harvest it forms.

ALSO GROWS

sperma: seed; offspring

σπέρμα

The seed is both what is sown and the beginning of what multiplies, so the act carries the shape of a later harvest.

spora: sowing; seed sown

σπορά

This branch keeps the seed and the act of sowing together, showing that the harvest begins in the planting.

θερίσει

therisei

GROWS FROM

θεριζ-

theriz-

to reap or harvest grain

“reaps” in this verse is therisei. The harvest is the visible completion of what planting began. It reveals the seed’s kind; it does not arrive disconnected from it.

ALSO GROWS

therismos: harvest

θερισμός

The harvest names the outcome toward which sowing moves.

theristēs: harvester; reaper

θεριστής

The reaper gathers what the planted field has brought to maturity.

What is planted takes time, but its harvest bears the character of its seed.

Sow for yourselves in alignment, reap in faithful love; break open your unbroken ground, for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and rains alignment upon you.
Hosea 10:12 · SDVSowing, breaking up the ground, and reaping form one unfolding process whose harvest reflects what was planted.
Those who sow in tears reap in a ringing cry.
Psalm 126:5 · SDVEven when the planting is marked by tears, the verse holds sowing and its later harvest together.
But this I say, the one who sows in holding back reaps in holding back, and the one who sows in blessings reaps in blessings.
2 Corinthians 9:6 · SDVThe scale of the harvest corresponds to the measure of the sowing.
For the one who sows into his own flesh reaps decay from the flesh, but the one who sows into the breath reaps from the breath the life of the ages.
Galatians 6:8 · SDV

The next verse uses the same words for sowing and reaping, then names two fields and their harvests. The image becomes precise: the outcome takes its character from what receives the seed.
