This verse in the King James

King James wording
And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Light is given permission to be before any visible lamp appears to carry it.

The verse speaks to you now: light is present before its visible instrument appears. The jussive lets light be; the next clause says it is. What becomes visible enters the scene as a possibility permitted into presence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that light can exist only when a lamp is already there: here light is present before the luminaries named later.

יְהִי

yəhî

GROWS FROM

היה

⁨הָיָה⁩ (hāyâ): to be, become, come to pass.

“Let there be” in this verse is yəhî. ⁨יְהִי⁩ (yəhî, “let it be”) is the jussive form of ⁨היה⁩ (hāyâ, “to be, become”); here, the grammar gives light permission to be. The next clause repeats the root in ⁨וַיְהִי⁩ (wayhî, “and it was”), naming light’s arrival.

ALSO GROWS

hāyâ: To be, become, come to pass.

הָיָה

This basic form makes the verse’s permission about being itself, not about a visible object being assembled.

wayhî: And it was; and it came to be.

וַיְהִי

The verse repeats the same root in its result clause: what is permitted to be appears.

אוֹר

ʾôr

GROWS FROM

אור

⁨אוֹר⁩ (ʾôr): light, shine, illumination.

English can make light sound like an object, but ⁨אור⁩ holds both light and shining. Here, light itself is present before the text names the luminaries that later carry it.

ALSO GROWS

māʾôr: A luminary; a light-source.

מָאוֹר

The word adds a bearer to the ⁨אור⁩ (ʾôr, light) root; Genesis names these bearers later, after light already appears.

ʾôrâ: Light, brightness.

אוֹרָה

This form preserves the same ⁨אור⁩ (ʾôr, light) consonants and shows the word’s reach beyond a single visible object.

The word brings light into presence before its bearers and uses are named.

And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to part the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for appointed times, and for days and years."
Genesis 1:14 · SDVLight is already present before these lights are appointed to mark time and serve as signs.
For he says, and it comes to be; he commands, and it stands.
Psalm 33:9 · SDVThe spoken word and the reality that follows it appear together, as they do when light is spoken and then is.
For God, who said, Light shall shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts, to give the light of knowing the weight of God in the face of Jesus, the Anointed One.
2 Corinthians 4:6 · SDVThe word’s command brings light into the present, where it shines within the reader.
Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105 · SDV

In Genesis, light follows God’s speech; here, the word is a lamp and light for the reader’s path. The shared root ⁨אור⁩ (ʾôr, light) joins the first illumination to guidance that reaches the next step.
