King James wording
King James Version
And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.THE KEY
The Hebrew word behind “nativity” also means kindred, placing Haran’s death within both the land and the lineage of his beginning.
THE MEANING
Haran dies before his father, in the land where his life began. The verse holds origin and grief in one place: a birthplace does not promise a life untouched by rupture.
THE ROOT
מוֹלַדְתּוֹ
moladto
GROWS FROM
ילד
יָלַד (yalad) means to bear, beget, or bring forth.
מוֹלֶדֶת (moledet, birth-origin or kindred) can name more than a birthplace: it can also name one’s kin. Here the land of birth and family belonging meet in one word, locating Haran’s death within both the place and people of his beginning.
ALSO GROWS
yalad: to bear or beget
יָלַד
The verb names the act of bringing forth from which the word for birth-origin grows.
yeled: child
יֶלֶד
A child is the one brought forth, linking birth to the family line held inside “nativity.”
toledot: generations or family origins
תּוֹלְדוֹת
This branch carries birth forward into the generations that grow from it.
THE PATTERN
A death within the family can stand at the threshold of movement from the place of origin.
And the LORD said to Abram, Go away from your land, from your land of birth, and from your father's house, to the land I will let you see. Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Charran, and from there, after his father had died, God moved him into this land where you now settle. Then she rose with her daughters-in-law, and turned back from the field of Moab, for she had heard in the field of Moab that the LORD had visited his people by giving them bread.THE THREAD
But you shall go to my land, and to my land of birth, and take a wife for my son Isaac.Genesis 24:4 uses מוֹלֶדֶת (moledet, birth-origin or kindred) from the same ילד (yalad, bear or beget) root family for “kindred.” That makes “nativity” wider than a birthplace: the word can hold both the land of a beginning and the people who share it.
