King James wording
King James Version
And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.THE KEY
The same Hebrew root describes both the deep sleep and the horror falling on Abram, binding bodily surrender and dread into one descent.
THE MEANING
When awareness gives way, dread can arrive as something that falls upon you, not as something you choose. The verse holds Abram under deep sleep and then under a horror of great darkness, without making the terror gentle or explaining it away. What is hidden from awareness remains part of the moment, even when the one inside it cannot see through it.
THE ROOT
וַתִּפֹּל
vatippol
GROWS FROM
נפל
n-p-l
To fall, descend, or come down upon.
“fell” in this verse is vatippol. The Hebrew uses this root first for the deep sleep that falls, then in a feminine participle for the horror falling upon Abram. The second form keeps the dread active in the grammar: it is still descending over him.
ALSO GROWS
nofel: A participle describing someone or something falling.
נֹפֵל
The verse uses its feminine form, נֹפֶלֶת (nofelet, “falling”), for the horror that descends upon Abram.
hippil: The causative form: to bring or cause something to fall.
הִפִּיל
Genesis 2:21 uses this form when the LORD causes a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, showing how this same root describes a descent brought upon someone.
THE PATTERN
What remains beyond a person’s awareness may still be actively unfolding.
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept, and he took one of his ribs and shut the flesh in its place.and he sleeps and wakes night and day, and the seed sprouts and stretches up, and he does not know how.Even darkness does not darken from you; the night lights up like day, and darkness is as light to you.THE THREAD
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept, and he took one of his ribs and shut the flesh in its place.Genesis 2:21 uses the same root נפל (naphal, “fall”) and the same noun תַּרְדֵּמָה (tardemah, “deep sleep”) as this verse. There, something is formed beyond Adam’s awareness; here, the same descent carries Abram into an experience he cannot yet see through.
