This verse in the King James

King James wording
In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

The verse’s “seed” is both offspring and what is sown, joining inheritance to a future already carried in the promise.

This verse speaks to the reader now of a promise whose giving is voiced as complete while its receiving unfolds through seed and generations. The same word holds offspring and what is sown, so the future is already carried within what the promise names. The covenant’s cut language gives that promise a marked, enacted form.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that what is not yet possessed has not been given: the gift is spoken of as complete while the seed’s future still stretches ahead.

זֶרַע

zeraʿ

GROWS FROM

זרע

z-r-ʿ

To sow or scatter seed.

The same Hebrew word names what is sown and the offspring that grows from it. Here the land belongs to the seed, holding inheritance and generation together.

ALSO GROWS

zāraʿ: To sow or scatter seed.

זָרַע

The verb shows the seed as something placed into the ground with growth still ahead.

zeraʿ: Seed; offspring or descendants.

זֶרַע

The noun can name both the planted seed and the descendants who inherit the land.

נָתַתִּי

nātattî

GROWS FROM

נתן

n-t-n

To give, set, or place.

The verb behind “have I given” is nathan: give, set, place. Its completed form lets the promise speak of the land as already placed in relation to the seed, even as the inheritance’s horizon continues outward.

ALSO GROWS

nātan: To give, set, or place.

נָתַן

This is the root verb beneath the completed “have I given.”

mattānāh: A gift; something bestowed.

מַתָּנָה

The gift form shows the giving as a bestowed thing, here the land named for the seed.

כָּרַת בְּרִית

kārat berit

GROWS FROM

כרת

k-r-t

To cut or sever.

The Hebrew expression literally says “cut a covenant,” giving the pledge an enacted, marked edge. Beside “I have given,” that image makes the promise sound both bound and bestowed.

ALSO GROWS

kārat: To cut or cut off.

כָּרַת

This is the verb used in the covenant expression, carrying the concrete image of a cut.

kāret: Cutting off or excision.

כָּרֵת

This related form retains the root’s sense of a definite cut, illuminating the marked quality of the covenant act.

A promised inheritance can be spoken of as already given before it is possessed.

And I will give you, and your seed after you, the land where you lodge as a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for a holding of the ages; and I will be their God.
Genesis 17:8 · SDVThe land is named as an inheritance for the seed before its possession unfolds.
Every place the sole of your foot treads, I have given to you, as I spoke to Moses.
Joshua 1:3 · SDVThe land ahead is spoken of as already given.
For the promise that he would be heir of the world did not come to Abraham or to his seed through instruction, but through the alignment of trust.
Romans 4:13 · SDVThe promise names Abraham and his seed as heirs of a world still to be received.
And the LORD was seen by Abram, and the LORD said, To your seed I will give this land. And there he built an altar to the LORD, who had been seen by him.
Genesis 12:7 · SDV

The promise uses the same ⁨נתן⁩ (nathan, give) root: “will I give” in Genesis 12:7 becomes “have I given” here. The thread moves from a promised gift to a gift spoken of as accomplished.
