This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

An heir can occupy the future, but seed is what generates it.

A household can have someone positioned to inherit while the life that carries a lineage forward is still absent. This verse lets you name that difference without confusing succession with generation. In “seed,” the beginning and its descendants remain joined.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Having someone to inherit does not erase the absence of the seed that would carry your own line forward.

זֶרַע

zeraʿ

GROWS FROM

זרע

z-r-ʿ

To sow; seed, what is sown.

The Hebrew word ⁨זֶרַע⁩ (zeraʿ, seed) also means offspring. One word holds both the planted beginning and the descendants it can become, linking what is missing now with the life that could continue.

ALSO GROWS

zāraʿ: To sow or plant.

זָרַע

The related verb shows seed as something placed into the ground to begin growth.

zeraʿ: Descendants or lineage.

זֶרַע

The same word names the life that continues beyond the seed itself.

יֹרֵשׁ

yōrēsh

GROWS FROM

ירש

y-r-sh

To inherit or take possession.

The word for heir is a form of ⁨יָרַשׁ⁩ (yāraš, inherit or possess). It names the one who takes what passes on, sharpening Abram’s distinction between someone positioned to inherit and the seed that generates a lineage.

ALSO GROWS

yāraš: To inherit or take possession.

יָרַשׁ

This verb describes what an heir does with what is passed on.

yerushah: An inheritance or possession received.

יְרֻשָּׁה

This branch names what succession transfers, distinct from the seed that produces descendants.

The future is carried forward through seed, whose one word holds both the planted beginning and the descendants it becomes.

And God said, "Let the earth sprout green growth, the seed-bearing plant, and the fruit tree making fruit after its kind, whose seed is in it, upon the earth." And it was so.
Genesis 1:11 · SDVThe seed within the fruit carries the beginning of what will grow and continue.
Do not be led astray. God is not sneered at. For whatever a person sows, that also he reaps.
Galatians 6:7 · SDVThe language of sowing and reaping links what is planted now with what follows.
Having been birthed again, not from seed that can be ruined but from what cannot be ruined, through the word of God, living and remaining for the ages.
1 Peter 1:23 · SDVSeed names the source from which a new life begins.
And he led him outside, and said, Look up toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them. And he said to him, So will your seed be.
Genesis 15:5 · SDV

The same Hebrew word, ⁨זֶרַע⁩ (zeraʿ, seed), returns and stretches from Abram’s household to the stars. The word that names what he says is absent now also names a future beyond what he can count.
