This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

The covenant mark is cut into Abraham’s body, and the word for the removed covering later names what remains resistant in the heart and lips.

At ninety-nine, Abraham’s body bears the covenant mark in the flesh. The verse speaks of belonging as something carried in vulnerable, specific flesh, not held only as an idea.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that covenant is only inward: here its sign is bodily and specific.

עָרְלָתוֹ

ʿorlato

GROWS FROM

ערל

To be uncircumcised; ⁨עָרְלָה⁩ names the foreskin.

This word-family also appears in phrases for “uncircumcised lips” and “foreskin of the heart.” The bodily sign remains literal, while the shared language shows how the image of a removable covering can also describe resistance in speech or the heart.

ALSO GROWS

ʿarel: A person or thing described as uncircumcised.

עָרֵל

It names the state associated with the covering that this verse says is cut away.

ʿarel sefatayim: A phrase for lips described as uncircumcised (Exodus 6:12).

עֲרַל שְׂפָתַיִם

The same word-family extends from the body to speech, where something is experienced as resistant or obstructed.

ʿorlat lev: A phrase naming the heart’s foreskin (Deuteronomy 10:16).

עָרְלַת לֵב

It carries the physical image of a covering into the heart, echoing the removal named here.

Covenant is pictured through the removal of a covering, an image that reaches from the body to the heart.

And you shall cut the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a mark of the covenant between me and you.
Genesis 17:11 · SDVThe covenant sign is explicitly a bodily cutting away.
So cut the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stiff-necked.
Deuteronomy 10:16 · SDVThe same physical image is applied to the heart and its resistance.
In him you were also circumcised, with a cutting not made by hands, in the stripping away of the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of the Anointed One.
Colossians 2:11 · SDVThe image appears again as a putting off, extending the pattern of removal beyond the bodily sign.
So cut the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stiff-necked.
Deuteronomy 10:16 · SDV

Deuteronomy uses the same Hebrew word-family for “foreskin” and applies the image to the heart. Genesis keeps the sign literal in the body; the shared language reveals that the same image of removal also reaches the heart’s resistance.
