King James wording
King James Version
In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.THE KEY
The “selfsame” day is named with עֶצֶם (ʿetsem, “bone; substance”), as the covenant sign is cut into flesh.
THE MEANING
Abraham and Ishmael receive the covenant’s bodily mark on one shared day. Ishmael’s name, יִשְׁמָעֵאל (Yishmaʿel, “God hears”), gives the second name in the sentence a nature of hearing as the shared sign reaches flesh. For you, the verse gives belonging a tangible shape: here, the covenant is carried in actual bodies.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that covenant belonging is only inward or abstract; here, the sign marks the body.
THE ROOT
בְּעֶצֶם הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה
be'etzem hayom hazeh
GROWS FROM
ע־צ־ם
Bone; substance; the thing itself.
“in the selfsame day” in this verse is be'etzem hayom hazeh. The Hebrew phrase means “on this very day,” but its key word, עֶצֶם (ʿetsem, “bone; substance”), gives the day a tangible center. The sentence places the covenant mark in the body within that very day.
ALSO GROWS
ʿetsem: Bone; the thing itself.
עֶצֶם
This is the noun carried in the phrase translated “selfsame,” joining exactness of time with bodily substance.
ʿatsamot: Bones.
עֲצָמוֹת
The plural names the body’s bones; it echoes the bodily reality of the covenant mark in this sentence.
נִמּוֹל
nimol
GROWS FROM
מ־ו־ל
Circumcise; mark through the act of circumcision.
“cut” in this verse is nimol. The verb names an alteration in flesh, and its form is passive: Abraham and Ishmael receive the mark. The one shared action places father and son under a visible covenant sign on the same day.
ALSO GROWS
mul: To circumcise.
מוּל
This is the root verb behind the act both men receive in the verse.
milah: Circumcision.
מִילָה
The noun names the bodily sign itself, bringing the verse’s action into view as a lasting mark.
יִשְׁמָעֵאל
Yishmaʿel
GROWS FROM
ש־מ־ע
Hear; listen.
Ishmael’s name means “God hears.” The verse places the one whose name carries hearing inside the same bodily act as Abraham, joining the name’s nature to the covenant’s visible sign.
ALSO GROWS
shamaʿ: Hear; listen.
שָׁמַע
This verb supplies the hearing element in Ishmael’s name.
shema: Hear and respond.
שְׁמַע
This form from the same root holds hearing together with response, giving the name’s hearing a lived dimension.
THE PATTERN
A covenant becomes visible when its appointed time arrives in a bodily sign or a people’s release.
And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all who were born in his house, and all who were bought with his silver, every male among the men of Abraham's house; and he cut the flesh of their foreskin in the very bone of that day, as God had spoken to him.And it came to be at the end of four hundred and thirty years, and on this very bone of the day it came to be, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt. And when eight days were filled for the cutting around of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was named by the messenger before he was gathered together in the womb.THE THREAD
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for out of man she was taken.Genesis 2:23 uses the same word, עֶצֶם (ʿetsem, “bone”), for “bone of my bones” that Genesis 17:26 uses in “selfsame day.” The shared word lets the day of Abraham and Ishmael’s bodily marking echo the language of the body itself.
