This verse in the King James

King James wording
As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

The Hebrew calls Abraham a father of a multitude of peoples: one life becomes the source of a many that crosses nations.

The promise reaches beyond one household: one life is named as father to many peoples. Its scope crosses nations and exceeds what is visible in a single family.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that covenantal belonging ends at one household or nation: this promise names many nations.

הֲמוֹן

hamon

GROWS FROM

המה

h-m-h

To murmur, roar, or surge; hamon means a multitude, crowd, or abundance.

English “many” gives a count; hamon also carries the sound of a crowd. The promise presents a multitude as a swelling collective presence, not merely an abstract number.

ALSO GROWS

hamah: To murmur, roar, or surge.

הָמָה

The multitude grows from the same root as the sound of a crowd rising together.

yehemūn: They roar; a form of the root used of waters in Psalm 46:3.

יֶהֱמוּן

The same root describes waters in tumult, giving “multitude” the feel of a living swell rather than a bare tally.

God’s promise to one person opens toward the blessing and belonging of many peoples.

And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse, and in you all the families of the ground will be blessed.
Genesis 12:3 · SDVThe promise to Abraham already extends outward to every family of the earth.
As it is written, I have set you as a father of many nations, before God, on whom he leaned his full weight, who makes the dead alive and calls the things that are not as though they were.
Romans 4:17 · SDVThe verse repeats the promise of fatherhood across many nations.
And the writing, seeing ahead that God would align the nations out of trust, announced the good message beforehand to Abraham, saying, In you all the nations will be blessed.
Galatians 3:8 · SDVThe promise’s reach is stated as blessing for all nations.
No longer shall your name be called Abram, but Abraham, father of multitudes, for I have set you as a father of many nations.
Genesis 17:5 · SDV

The next verse makes the promise a name: Abraham is named as father of a multitude of nations. The verse itself compresses the covenant’s future into his name, making its reach part of his identity.
